You've used that analogy before, Zimmerman. You're become tiresome.

And I've told you before that with enough gasoline you will be able to put out a fire!

I don't think it counts as a genuine effort if its not going to work, or worse still, will exacerbate the problem.

It's like saying someone who is throwing gasoline on a fire in a misplaced effort to put the fire out is at least doing something to stop the fire.

That said, its questionable whether most Labor politicians actually believe this will work. It strikes me as a convenient excuse to push through all the excessive spending they wanted to get through regardless of the crisis.
soon the ancient Labor dream of full home insulation will be complete! For centuries we have waited in the shadows, but now we will make ourselves known!

ISP filter to block worst net nasties | The Australian

THE federal government has green-lighted its highly controversial censorship plan to introduce a mandatory internet filter that will block refused classification content from being accessed on Australian soil.

New legislative amendments to be introduced to the Broadcasting Services Act when parliament resumes next year could see all internet service providers block refused classification-rated material hosted on overseas servers.

That filter was one locally installed on the computer the kid was using. Those can be easily bypassed as you actually have some control of what's on your own computer, i.e. you can just remove it, crack it, whatever. The new filter is installed on the ISP's, so you have no control over it.

I think the only way to bypass this filter would be by using an encrypted connection (VPN, SSH, etc.), so even your ISP can't see what URL's you are visiting.

Everything humans create can be destroyed. This filter will be bypassed eventually.

In the meantime, I see this as an attempt for Krudd-Mart to block any speech against his Government, covered up by the promise of blocking pornz so the religious peeps vote for him.

(P.S. If anything needs to be blocked, child porn and bestiality is on my list)

Will it block torrents?
Filtering test report - http://whirlpool.net.au/img/article/1852/isp_filtering_live_pilot_report_low_res.pdf:

Telstra found its filtering solution was not effective in the case of non-web based
protocols such as instant messaging, peer-to-peer or chat rooms. Enex confirms that
this is also the case for all filters presented in the pilot. Telstra reported that heavy
traffic sites could overload its trial filtering solution if included in the filtering blacklist.
This is also the case for all filters presented in the pilot.

There's a section in the report on circumvention, but it obviously doesn't detail what methods were used.

Well that is good at least, although the whole thing is ridiculous, im all for blocking child porn and beastiality and shit but soon after the implementation they'll become tyrannts and block a much wider range of things which will be fucken shithouse.
