f'(x) = limh->0((f(x+h) - f(x)/h)

Say, let f(x) = x2. Let's differentiate from Newton's first principle:

f'(x) = ((x+h)2 - x2/h)
Expanding (x+h)2
f'(x) = (x2 + 2xh + h2 - x2)/h)
Subtracting x2
f'(x) = (2xh + h2)/h
Taking out common factor h
f'(x) = h(2x + h)/h
Cancelling h
f'(x)= 2x + h
Now, take the limit as h -> 0
We get,
f(x) = 2x
Which d(x2)/dx = 2x

they can ask you to differentiate something using first principles, so you will need to know how to do them.
