They only produce magnetic fields when they are magnetised. Ordinary Fe and compounds containing Fe aren't usually magnetised, off the top of my head.

Their magnetism comes from a pair of electrons (deep-ish) within the electron shells. Thus, it possesses a magnetic moment regardless of ion/isotope.

To get a permanent field you'll still need to align them though.
