You can use as portable hardrive, if you bring the cable around.

There is even a software package to bring your whole computer around, so you can use your files at work.

that's the software I was refering to.

I reckon its a little bulky to use as usb drive, but if you don't mind carrying it around, yeah you can do that.
not as bulky as using a 3.5" inch drive ina slim case! (am refering to the fact that you may want more than 1 gig of storage space so that rules out a memory stick..which are about as expensive as a drive in a case if not more)
I use a 3.5" 30 gig in a USB Vaio case (one of those really slim ones) and its as big as my ipod!

If you use a mac, yo dont need any software as the ipod just mounts on your desktop and you drop and drag from either the ipod or your computer

Depends on your needs...I use my 40 gig ipod mainly for digital photography as I can fill a 512 mg card very quickly!

you can get things like this, which are basicly an ipod mini hard drive in a case, with usb cable included.
now that is different..... I like the design but I would lose something that small

meh..Ill stick with my 10 gig and 30 gig hard drives in USB/Firwire cases (respectively!) for backup and storage along with my ipod. The joys of upgrading and never throwing anything out!

lol

An ipod is like any other storage device, it can store stuff just like a usb stick.

...?

I don't see what the issue with Ipod batteries is. It's unlikely the battery will die on you before you get a new device - and at that rate, probably several years at least of battery life. That's pretty damn good. If you really wanted a new battery three years from now, it would probably be cheaper to buy the latest version of the Ipod, or one a generation behind.
