meh, i worked my arse off for my schools SRC, harder than anyone else (now i sound up myself, but its just what ive been told) so im not doing it again for the union

student unions are compulsory at all uni's...the governement tried to pass the VSU (Voluntary Student Unions) bill a few years ago but they failed (my brother was president of the Newcastle University Student Assosciation when they tried to). the student unions are very important to the running of your uni - you should try and support them as much as possible

at USYD its compulsory to pay and join the union- so i guess i had no choice. 
so thats y i'm gonna use my subscription to the max. and join all the clubs and societies, and also use the discounts to the max....i have made a great start: i've got around 3 copies of the university diary, since i payed for it, and also it will mean, that i have 3 times the vouchers.

It sounds like the union provides so many useful services.... I think it's worthwhile, the joining fee (at least at UTS) is reasonable for what they provide.

i think most uni's have two union-esque things
eg: UTS has got the Union, which does cheap food, a few newsagents and supply shops, funds the clubs and societies, that sort of thing. also, strangely, publishes a newsletter that is pretty much the voice of the Young Liberals club.
then there's the students association. that's got all those dirty, smelly, horrible activists in there. no, some of them are cool. others are sort of psychotic. but they're not all socialists -- in fact i hardly know any socialists in the SA. let's see: we've got anarchists, feminists, gay rights, greenies, education activists, refugee advocates, gay anarcho-feminist green education activists, that sort of thing. the SA do collectives (green, education, refugee, sexuality/queer, womens (or womyns), and probably more), organise rallies and demos, and other stuff like student rights, resolving staff/student disputes, etc. oh, and they publish vertigo, the uts student press. currently the SA is dominated by the broad left, but there's also some labor left in there too.

?Subsidised food... I am sure that this only means that there is a greater variety on offer rather than cheaper food... The classic example of this little idea is that you have to pay $2 for a bottle of water at a USyd Student Union outlet while the same bottle would cost $1.80 at a store in Redfern (that is what it was like 6 months ago, anyway).
I am yet to see anything worthwhile from the union, apart from level four of the Wentworth building, and I do not see any point in paying to keep an 'old boys' sporting association active, so why should we be forced to pay for the upkeep of such organisations? However, the SRC serves a purpose, and the services it provides should not be put under threat by voluntary payments.
To keep one it seems as though we must fight for them all, which is a bit of a bastard.
