i sure as fuck hope not. latham saying "sorry" would basically be accepting liability for all that shit..... and hence large amounts of compensation would have to be paid out.... millions and millions of our tax dollars gone to waste....

legally the deference between howard saying 'im sorry' and 'i deeply regret [what happened]' will not make one iota of difference in terms legal action...

what exactly are the aboriginal people suing for anyways...its a big fat lie to suggest that compensation would happen if he said sorry...the Canadian experi is much different to ours...

I could russel about a few articles that slam the idea of compensation when someone says sorry...but i cbf
'sorry' makes the world of difference. Just look what happened in Canada.

He doesn't have the balls to say it...**giggles immaturely**

But like Asquithian said, this won't be a major issue of the election.

Ah... saying 'sorry' is to be taken in a sense of:

X: My dad died.

Y: I'm sorry.

Not an admission of liability. Even so construed the law as it was then was different.

That doesn't bother me much.. I'm fairly sure tony abbot and alexander downer both kinda admitted to smoking pot... cheating on his wife I think that was more of a personal matter and everyone should just back off him on that... And i'd kick some guys ass if he was messing with me too.

Latham is a smart man of good character & a proud australian AS is Howard.. please don't discredit their names by just bitching about them.
I agree with Latham being smart, I mean he's got a Bachelor of Economics degree (Honours). That in itself is a pretty big achievement, but of good character? I haven't fully made my mind up on that one.

Asqui and other law-arians have already stated that saying 'sorry' would not make them liable. I'm really having difficulty accepting your conservative views BreaKing since they almost always have little to no substance backing them up...

With the legal stuff aside...

Don't you think that our country does owe Indigenous Australians an apology for their sub-standard treatment? Australia has treated Aborigines as second class citizens for too long, and although saying sorry won't heal everything, it's a shit load better than ignoring the past.

That's good to know, I've given my girlfriend quite a few sorries over the years.

Sorry for coming late
Sorry for coming early

lol...idiot!

As for the sorry, if two law students say its not an admission of guilt then its not an admission of guilt. However, I won't be saying sorry to them, and I don't think its up to the Prime Minister to do so.

I'm an immigrant :p

I don't quite understand the arguments because I've never bothered to read up about it, but what would be the purpose of saying sorry? I can't see it fixing the appalling state of health, education and opportunities available for Aboriginals at all.

I mean it's meant to be a symbolic gesture right? So wouldn't it be cheaper for the government to just go "umm yeah, sorry" and not worry at all about ACTING in a more meaningful way or what?

All that people have thrown around here is some loosely cobbled together arguments against saying sorry related to other minorities somehow but no one has explained what saying sorry would do and why it should be said.

The law people saying sorry would be in the sense of condolence rather than an admission of guilt, right?

But I thought litigation was a fairly widely held concern r.e. the 'sorry' thing. Is there another reason why Howard wont say sorry? Shouldn't the churches be important?
