i was just wonderin if law was ok.. i cant remember if i posted a similar thread but cant find it.. thats ok.. anyone with experience in law at unsw would be good to talk to??

You both do law at UNSW, and neither of you contributed anything! I'm appalled.

How about you tell us what you mean by "ok", funkychickie? Ask specific questions and you'll receive specific answers - it takes too much effort to write a 3 page dissertation in response to a general inquiry. Make a small list that details exactly what you want to know.

1) There are generally four hours of timetabled classes per law subject. You end up doing the same amount as those doing single degrees (but you stay at uni for an extra two years).

2) Whilst there are a lot of readings to do, the workload is far from unmanageable - most of them are pretty interesting too. I think most people struggle more with the conceptual requirements of the workload rather than the actual quantity...

3) In my opinion, yes.

4) There's usually somewhere between 20 and 30 students per class... they're all capped to ensure small groups. [Edit - Asq's 10 to 40 range is probably more accurate.]

we have 3.5rows (i.e there are 4 rows, but there's a break in the 3rd row in which our tutor stands, so i'm only really 3rows away...hehe he didn't know our names until he was handing back our tests on wednesday, so I'm thinking we may have to be a bit quieter soon

What qualities do u need to do well (or cope with) in LAW.
What's the main subject that Law relies on from high school..english , legal studies..debating.???

What are the main form of assessments in Law?...essays?..presentations.?..

Also does the uni u graduate from make that much of a difference? Since sydney and unsw seem quite difficult to get into.

Legal Studies is one of those "interest only" subjects - Business, Legal, Senior Science, General Maths etc. They're designed for people who have a mild interest in something but can't or won't get into a career in that area.

In selective schools we avoid legal studies because it is seen as "the subject to do if you've got no chance of getting into law". That shouldn't dishearten you or anything though - legal s basically dumbed down first semester law, which could be useful if you get the UAI you need.

Economics and Modern History are seen to be very good, because you have to look at trends and think analytically. You also learn to take a wide variety of factors into account when making a judgement. At least, that's what I'm told.

Absolutely! Lawyers need to be able to think creatively about meaning, as well as being able to actively express ideas.

Don't feel bad if you're NOT good at English though. The things they ask you to do in uni are very different to the kind of stuff those syllabus-monkeys at the Board would have us believe.

Some people think argumentative (they're the ones that tell me to go for law) but personally I don't think that's wise. Argumentative people reply on impulse, which won't get you anywhere.

A good lawyer needs a sharp mind, they need to be organised and they need to LISTEN. If you can listen, think and organise your thoughts you will be able to function well in any legal specialisation. It's also good if you're motivated to work hard, because nothing else will get you 99.8
