I've literally never seen this before, but it was a part of an exercise my teacher gave us, is this something we need to know?

looks just like any cambridge math excercise - they are garbage over complicated questions with no relevance to actual questions.

i'd assume it means the variables are altered. e.g for a), all variables are doubled. for b), 5 is added to every variable.
(this is basing it off the E(x^2)-E(x)^2 thing)
