The solutions used the mod 5 centripetal force equation so I was not sure whether this was part of mechanics in extension 2 maths? Is it?

This is in the old syllabus, it deals with torque etc which is not in the current but yes it would fall under mechanics

double check with your teacher but im pretty sure its not as if it is dealing with circular motion which is old syllabus,

new syllabus deals mainly with resisted motion e.g projectile, in the horizontal and vertical plane as well as SMH and accel in terms of displacement

If you check the X2 syllabus, there's no mention to circular motion. Highly unlikely you'll get that type of question but I've seen very very rale some in X1 similar to that since the application of vectors is very vague.
