WInd in the willows can be linked to physical journeys because (bear with me the group that presented this were very vague) Toads enthusiam and rats lack thereof show a conflicting view to journey's. BUt to answerr your question in short it can be used for physcial journeys with soem careful manipulation

the road can be said to be a metaphor.......and in the Wind in the Willows, Toad is anticipating the journey...while Ratty is reluctant to travel....theres good quotes on tht....

Wind in da willows is perfect as a physical journey coz it’s an anthropomorphic fable with the animals representing realistic individuals where one is ambitious, prepared and optimistic about the prospect of a physical journey, another who is reluctant fearsome, stubborn and determined to stay in his comfort zone and one who’s ‘tremendously’ enthusiastic and curious but can’t come to a resolution whether to embark on the journey.

The Rat represents the literal attitude of people who are hesitant to explore and experience the Unknown.

The ‘gipsy’ caravan is a symbol of a physical, literal journey. It symbolises that the physical journey is a fantasy that is exotic, exciting and romantic but one that not everyone will like. Grahame ends the fable with a rhetorical question ‘aren’t you, Mole? keeping the responder contemplating the answer and depicts how sometimes indecision allows the physical journey to abruptly end.

It is perfect for Physical Journey. In the text, 3 characters represent 3 different aspect towards journey. Toad is a character who loves to travel,who is enthusiamsm and optimism. In the other hand, Rat is a character who has a negative attitude to journey. And in the middle, we have Mole, who is undecisive and hesitating about going on a journey.
The author has used various techniques to convey the idea of journey throughout the text such as : powerful imagery, emotive words,etc. He has represented a active, physical journey by using a lot of colourful images sucs as :"yellow, green and red wheels". Also, images like "open road, dusty highway, gipsy caravan" symbolises the journey with many possibilities. The list of places like :"Camps, villages,...cities" shows the variety of physical journey. With 7 exclamation marks, the author has emphasize the anticipation and enthusiasm of Toad towards journey. Unlike Toad, Rat "only snorted and..... remanining where he was" display such a negative mind about taking on a journey. Rat symbolises for those who don't want to move away from everyday routine :"I'm not going and that's flat". Anthropomorphism (or personification ) is used successfully to conveys the idea about journey more general.
