Do software engineering, that seems to be what you're looking for. You can also major in Enterprise Systems or Inter-networking Applications if you do Science in IT @ UTS, both are related to programming, check out their handbook, I'll be doing Inter-networking applications, more stuff to do with web development.

doesn't Comp Sci look more attractive to employers when applying for a DEVELOPMENT job over a B.I.T on your resume?

I have seen the UNSW courses, now tell me one thing. Does Comp Sci require intense physics? I've noticed UOW just requires maths for their comp sci. And another option is Sydney, which only seems to do maths. What level maths would be required for comp sci? UOW says Mathematics (not general) so I guess I'm fine with that, But I've heard rumours UNSW has higher maths requirements. even though you can choose normal level and advanced maths. please clear some stuff up thanks.

yeah no physics at UNSW, would say 3u but 2u you can survive. 1st semester you do do maths discrete(logic based type) and maths1a(which all engineers/etc have to do), then maths2b in 2nd semster.

Also for programming you need really good analytical/problem solving/logic skills which all feed off from sound understanding of maths. In programming you will be writing alogrithims and what not.

and the logic crap is a pain in the ass, we did some for web systems.

I know of at least one (very good) australian company who will not employ B.IT grads and only looks for comp sci/soft eng grads

B.I.T will get you more bank type roles. Never ever do real software development.

Also i bet the company he's referring to is atlassian

I have done some fairly extensve research on the differences between a Backelor of Compuer Science and a Bachelor of Software engineering and please correct me if I am wrong but from my research I have found that both computer science and seng degrees study the same exact core subjects and infact you can do a bachelor of computer science and do the exact same subjects as someone who does a seng degree by choosing the same electives that they do and visa versa.
The only difference I have found is that seng students do an extra year which consists of a development project which makes their degree 4 years instead of comp science's 3. Personally I would rather be in industy that extra year which is why I reckon I will study a Bachelor of Computer Science.

A Bachelor of IT studies many (but not all) of the core comp / seng courses and focuses on IT management systems.

From what I can see all 3 courses can be modified to cover the exact same content. It just depends on what you would rather call yourself ... A "compSci graduate", "BIT graduate" or "Seng graduate" :) but less people are hired under a BIT as for some reason employers dont credit the course as highly as the other 2.
both UNSW and USYD are equally good choices with a Bachelor of Science in IT @ UTS being a good second choice that is more like BIT at USYD.

Is this correct?

pretty much this, but for seng you have alot more "cores" while comp sci you dont have as many.

yes but the 'cores' in seng that arent covered in comsci are all math based.

no thats incorrect (for UNSW atleast)

Comp sci/seng have the same maths one.

Let me give you an example or 2. Common cores between comp sci and software engineering are 5, maths1a, maths1b, discrete maths, computing 1, computing 2.

Thats all the comp sci kids have to do while seng will have to INFS1603 (business databases) and seng1031(seng workshop). So seng kids have 2 extra cores. The seng at UNSW have to seng workshops and INFS related subjects. If you want flexibility do comp sci.

Seng extra year because we have thesis in 4th year while comp sci dont, but many do honurs etc so we pretty much spend the same time.

I like computer science for it's flexibility :) and it sounds and looks better then saying I.T or B.I.T. CompSci looks more technical (and it is-more maths involved thana general I.T course). is computer science flexible enough to go into an I.T pathway? or could it even be expanded to go into computer engineering specialising in hardware? i've heard that computer engineers deal with both "the software and the hardware that makes it tick"

and Usyd offers it as B.C.S.T and has a computer science stream for "more technical minded students" while B.i.t is for more information system management students. Usyd also have Design computing which is in the architecture/design faculty and is aimed at more of the design and interaction of multimedia software, though you still do core maths and programming subjects.

at UNSW comp sci you are able to do INFS subjects which is like I.T subjects e.g. business databases, project management etc.

the USYD BIT has a comp sci stream as well similar to the BCST(Adv)

I've heard that after the recession heaps of software developers lost their jobs :( and what's up with the BCST(adv) course it's not like an employer is gona say wtf is that you didn't do adv I'm not hiring you.
