Selecting your major in the new IT courses
This is for students in the new IT undergraduate courses introduced at the start of 2007.

These are C10148 vers 4, C10152 vers 4, and C10219 vers 3.

Some of you have already chosen your IT major, but most of you have not done so yet. To prepare for re-enrolment later in the year and to give us an idea of demand for subjects next year, we would like you to select your major by the end of September.

To assist you with this choice, we are holding an information session on

Wednesday 12th September at 1600-1700 (4 pm) in 10.2.460

Staff will give presentations about the majors and answer questions.

Here (http://staff.it.uts.edu.au/~jim/UGnew/majors2008.pdf) is a document describing the majors and the subjects available in 2008.

(note: many of you are currently enrolled in 31244 Applications Programming and 31247 Collaborative Business Processes. One of these is a subject for your major, the other may be an elective; which is which depends on what major you choose)

I wish my uni had more major varities as UTS, my mine is very limited.

If I would be doing finance as a mjaor, then what major should I select from the IT side?

In terms of compability and future prospects.

I would say Business Information Systems Management. For a business student, this major would probably be the only one that complements with business.

Have a read of Jim Underwood's document in my first post. You might find the other 3 majors interesting.. so by all means don't just pick the norm.

the computing and analytics seems like a good one for something like business intelligence.

I want my majors to have some sort of connections among them..

I'm really thinking of doing the B Business/ B Science in IT Degree next year. If i do intend to go to UTS, i was wondering what is the Internetworking & Applications major like??. Is there any hardcore programming involved because i really suck at programming lol but like the theoretical component of IT security seems to interest me... Does the Business information systems management have any programming as well?

Internetworking & Applications- The only programming in subjects that are core subjects in I&A are Applications Programming (Java) and Web Services Development (maybe some simple web programming stuff). If you are doing BBus/BScIT you would be doing "Programming Fundamentals" in your first year of uni, and that will kick you off with Java (assumes you know nothing about it and starts from the basics).

Business information systems management - Looking at the handbook it doesn't look like there is any programming at all.

Also, I'd recommend going to the open days later this year and asking some students who are doing the individual majors. I can't really help you too much because the course offered right now had a major restructure in 2006 (some of my subjects aren't the same as the ones you would be doing).

huratio, tell me more about your IT major, mobile computing, seems like a very interesting one. do you have Wire less and progamming subjects in your major?

Yeah. It has a bit of normal cable networking (CCNA 1 and 2), wireless networking and some WAP/WML programming.

Unfortunately you can't do this sub-major anymore, because it is a pre-2006 choice. It is similar to some of the subjects offered in Internetworking and Applications now though.
