Hay chris,

seeing as u work at the city Hub, have u had anybody ask about iphone access to the uni wifi network?
if so, have u granted them access without having to use that ridiculous Cisco Clean Access thing?
Because the iphone/ipod touch doesnt support java and Clean access requires it.

We haven't been briefed on iPhone connectivity and whether it's available or not, but im thinking it wouldn't be, for the reason you've mentioned with Cisco.

We have problems with a lot of laptops that can't recognise Cisco even when we install it directly to their laptop, so im not liking the chances of connecting iPhones.

I'll check it out though, and get back to you.

The iPhone (or iPod Touches) will not be able to get past the Cisco Clean Access authentication. The iPhone doesn't have the required Java software to handle the authentication part.

IT Services is evaluating iPhones and may offer different support in the future. We will advise when that happens.

Below is our official response which is identical to that one already presented to the student in this case.

"The current official stance of IT Services is that iPhones and iPod Touches are NOT supported in the same that other mobile devices haven't been supported since wireless was introduced.

If students can't get them to work (connecting to wireless, proxy problems, etc), then IT Services will NOT provide any support to assist the student. Students are to be advised that we do NOT support these devices.

This means that if students can get them to work, well and good, enjoy. As for Linux workstations.

IT Services is evaluating the technology/devices and may provide different support arrangements in the future."

Yeah, so the answer comes with the standard verbatim form "Students are to be advised that we do NOT support these devices," which means if students can connect themselves, thats fine; but we won't help.
