Yeah I'd tend to agree, in saying that, I have seen some really difficult JR questions (I posted a thread here not too long ago about one in particular), but typically others tend to be harder

In my opinion, as said by Haya, I would actually say that Sydney Grammar trials for example are harder than James Ruse trials, for 4U Maths.

very true, syd grammar have crazy trial papers. In terms of maths, syd grammar are the second highest ranking school in the HSC (obvs behind ruse).

But really? I've done some baulko and nsb papers and they really don't compare to Ruse imo

Not to mention the crazy marking guidelines ruse has, and how much more the school demands in terms of setting out.

I mean, if they were that easy, how come last year only like 2 people at ruse got above 100/120 in the trials (i think the top mark was 108) lol

But yea I agree, sydney grammar is harder- the ones that I've done have a lot of interesting questions but not quite the breadth of topics as ruse (it seems they only test resisted motion for mechanics during trials)

Crazy marking guidelines? M8 this math not chemistry. If you're working out and answer is correct then you get full marks. There is no "crazy marking"

Also where are you getting your information from LOL? It seems to be bullshit because papers are now out of 100 not 120.

"Correct" is a slightly subjective term when it comes to working out.

There are often multiple ways of doing things, as well as the student's choice of how much detail to explain his reasoning in.

Different schools / even different staff members at the same school will generally have different expectations here, and the marking guidelines cannot unambiguously grade every possible response.

The actual questions in HSC exams are easier than a lot of trials, but IMO the markers are less permissive when it comes to working than most graders of trial exams.

I would expect that the JR grading is similarly less permissive for the benefit of the frequent students in contention for state ranks etc.

James Ruse Trials are easy. I don't even do Mathematics Extension 2 and they are easy.

Lol try telling the ruse maths teachers that. They are unbelievably pedantic about certain details. They've become even stricter this year since ruse got no state ranks in 3U last year despite having a lot of people on 100 rip

I normally lose around 5-6 marks every exam just based on working out. (and yes, I go to ruse)

Well my point is also that pedantry is not a linear scale. Some markers dislike geometric methods in questions that aren't specifically about geometry for example, some are especially anal about the formatting of Euclidean geometry proofs, some are more tolerant than others about ambiguous wording in combinatorics questions etc etc.

I once lost a whole mark for using abbreviations in my proofs (ie supp. angles, alt. angles etc)

Same. Also lost marks for drawing the triangle thing instead of writing it out and lost marks for forgetting to say which parallel lines. But c'mon. If angle X = angle Y because of something stupid like being alternate angles, there's only one parallel line it can occur on.

Naming the parallel lines IS important if there is more than one pair. It is not a selective school thing. (Not sure why 'being alternate angles' equates to 'something stupid')

Being penalised for sensible abbreviations though is ridiculous. But this is coming from instructions from head HSC markers. Their justification for penalising "alt. angles" is that many students actually write "alternative angles", and the markers can't tell what "alt" stands for in the student's mind. My opinion is - who cares.
