My initial reaction was surprise Rudd did the right thing. I had him pegged as a contemptuous scumbag, this selfless act was totally uncharacteristic.
On reflection, there is nothing selfless about his resignation. He was about to be (deservedly) humiliated, he simply had the basic intelligence to metagame the situation.

I think it's ridiculous he was seen as a threat for doing his FM job and being comparatively liked by the public.
This whole shambles will only hurt the Party and the next polls, I think we'll see a definite swing.

ALP's Member for Bendigo: Kevin Rudd 'a psychopath with a giant ego' - most labor MPs in mid 2010 emphatically agreed with that assessment, he was 'Australia's most popular prime minister' of all time, yet he lost to Gillard in a vote for a very good reason. Rudd won elections, parties support leaders who win elections unless they have a very good reason not to.

He was hated by everyone within the labor party. He was rolled in the first place because he was a huge cunt in every regard. This is indisputed historical record

He was constantly and deliberately undermining the prime minister for the past 8 months, recent comments by Rudd's supporters openly agitating for change would have forced the prime minister to ask for his resignation soon, which would have been hugely humiliating. Gillard couldn't let him stay on, it would appear extremely weak, people already accuse her of not leading the labour party, not expelling Rudd would imply she lacked confidence she had the support of her party. His preferred agenda would have been to continue undermining the prime minister, he has been thwarted by his own supporters who moved too soon. His resignation speech is totally disingenous in blaming the prime minister for inciting division, and bigupping himself as promoting unity (in their actions in the past month).
