I want to buy a laptop and wanted some advice on what are the best buys. My budget isnt huge - $1200-1800.

core2duo 1.66ghz
80GB HDD
2GB RAM
15.4 inch LCD screen
ATI Radeon x1700 graphics card

So far I'm happy with my purchase

I bought the S41.
I think it'll be a bit out of his budget unless he is just purchasing the machine only.

nVIDIA 8600M [I think it's the only lappy so far to have this]
1Gig RAM [I did a 2gig upgrade for $60]

The cheapest retail price you'll be able to get is around the $1750 mark. But then [unless you have it] you'll need to buy all that office, anti-virus, etc bullcrap which will possibly end up costing you another few hundred.

It's a major bang for your buck. Seriously. But all in all it'll end up costing around $2000. Which is a tad out of your budget. Unless you got connections you can get it all within your budget.

the macbooks are falling in price all the time. last time i checked for a comp with:
100 gb hard drive
2.16 ghz
core 2 duo
dvd burner

for about 1500 dollars

Laptops are cheaper ifyou dont get them with vista, which is shit anyway. Its even cheaper if you get them without any OS which is good for me cause i use linux. Im looking at one thats amd duo 1.6 80Gb HD 2Gb RAM for about $890
