well i thought if you downloaded stuff that are not uni related, you just pay for the downloads, which is like 15c per megabyte
never heard of getting fined $1000 though

I bought one before second semester in third year. It wasn't too useful. But it helped in the sense I had all my SDP notes on it, otherwise the books they give are way too heavy to carry =/. But I wouldn't recommend you to buy one.

I have too seen people in first year bring laptops and it decreases gradually as time goes. Most people use it to waste time, such as play games. It does seem cool initially, but really seems like a show off and a waste of time, comparing who has what config on the laptops.

You can WinScp or FTP the documents to the lab computers so you don't necessarily need a USB key either. At least I haven't had the need to, it is a lot easier to FTP documents from home before hand - I am lazy :p.

Also, I saw one guy in first year bring a web cam and connected it to his mac and recorded Dr Lister's lecture. Most of the time he was busy fixing the camera. Why can't you just listen to the lecture and jot down while you are there? Recording could help but it won't 'cos you would say, who cares I have it with me and I can watch/listen it just once =/.

Yep so true. First years sit at the back of lectures and play WC3 the whole time.

Laptops are very useless especially because you are an IT student Spider.
You have access to a computer pretty much 24/7 on campus if you need it.

But if you want to bring your laptop, the wireless network(s) are there to be used.
And.. I never really saw the point of recording lectures. Wasting an additional 1-3 hours re-listening to the lecture because you weren't listening to it in the first place doesn't appeal to me.

I find laptops easier

I type my notes anyway
so if i wrote them, it would be double effort retyping what i wrote
plus theres the chance of me not being able to read what i wrote too :p

And I agree, recording lectures is a waste
just try and listen the first time :p

lol, oh wells..my one arrives in 2 days anyway :\

my writing sucks btw.., like really sucks, my teachers complained about it last year lol.., so it might help me in that sense.

meh, i guess at the end of the day its about wether you use it for what you got it and to its max potential..

i was really thinking about getting a tablet, but decided against it at the last second and opted for decent specs instead :\ (tablets, add about 1k to the cost).

Not everything that you thought was important in the lecture may be important for assessments.

Thats why I handwrite notes, then type up summarised notes from those.

yah this is what i do too.

well at least i try to type up notes from them - it tends to work for the first half of the semester, then i study off my lecture notes.

and i actually have a laptop on me a fair amount of the time because of work, so that is how useless i have found it. although i did use it for a bit in stats to check out some of the formulas whilst paul was explaining them.

Not everything works for everyone. I find writing helps me understand the work a lot more than it would if I was typing. Each to their own. I type my notes when I read the book though.

Laptops are useless at uni, almost. Its better to hand write notes. Though its probably useful in your degree.

I just bring my laptop to uni to take advantage of super fast FREE internet. I download porn all day long. <3
