I have a laptop and I don't take it to lectures.
While a laptop might be good and quick for writing up basic notes, you soon find out that they're very bad when the lecturer puts up a diagram on the whiteboard. How do you draw the diagram into an MS Word document? You could do it but it will take you a million years on a laptop.
Best thing for a lecture is a notepad and pen. If you cant write quick, then take an iPod or some other device that can record and ask the lecturer if you can record their lecture. Most lecturers will allow you to do it, and if so, you put the recorder up the front so it can pick up his or her voice.
Then you can take notes on a laptop when you get home.
