LITERALLY THIS. I don't know why this is so difficult to acknowledge. I'm not calling private school kids privileged brats I'm just saying high ranking schools are usually private (and I thought selective was obvi) 😭
Ikr, sometimes I’m stunned how ppl literally don’t know this 😭😭😭
i'm really sorry if i came off as ignorant 😭 i also attend a selective school, and i definitely do acknowledge my privilege as someone who is able to afford extra tutoring for some of my subjects, but i wanted to point out the fact that selective schools are, at the end of the day, also public schools, because unlike private, it is not always a pay-to-win as i have learned from a lot of my friends, who do not attend any tutoring and are extremely bright. selective schools indeed receive more opportunities offered by their schools because there is that recognition of a higher standard that is placed upon the students, but i was moreso trying to recognise that selective schools are almost always the best option for individuals who are striving to get a high atar, and are willing to put in hard work, but do not necessarily have the resources available to pay for private schools, who otherwise dominate the hsc rankings. again, i'm really sorry if it sounded like i was ignoring the whole selective school tutoring privilege fact🙇‍♀️

Look I understand where you’re coming from but just bc selective schools r technically “public” doesn’t mean they‘re similar to your average public school. While there a few naturally bright individuals with no tutoring, I’d argue that more than 95% of ppl who got into selective only did so bc of tutoring ( which most still do for the hsc let’s be real)- which does make acceptance a more pay-to-win system. This is coming from someone who did go to a public school hs before attending a selective one so the inequality is a way more obvious to me. You don’t sound ignorant tho, the things u say about selective schools like about the opportunities offered r true, but personally to me, I don’t believe someone should warrant a better education ( the resources and opportunities I mean) for a test they did in year 6. Like that’s not a great indicator of intelligence lol ( personal gripe 😭)

Just wondering if anyone knows what date lat results usually get released as it says mid-november. I think last year they were released on November 15? Also do we get emailed them or do we need to view them through ACER or something. Thank you! 🙏

accurate take; this is the whole reason there was a media stink years ago about the selective test. even by the end of year 12 i would estimate conservatively at least 90% of students in my cohort were being tutored.

intelligence has next to no bearing on whether you can rote memorise the type and form of each question being asked. the overwhelming majority of selective school students get in through tutoring at a young age. tutoring is expensive and a privilege afforded to people of a higher socio-economic class where their parents have significant disposable income, whether or not they like to label themselves 'middle class'. the advantage is immediately clear when you compare the position of students without, having a 50 minute or so period with a teacher whose expertise can vary greatly and has their attention split between 30 odd students, against dedicated hours with an individual who is generally 'qualified' in that area to some degree with their sole focus being on you (or a small group). none of this is to say that these students aren't hardworking or that they're unintelligent or idiots; it's just that there are plenty of kids who are equally, if not more intelligent, stuck in the public school system with the deck stacked against them who will see vastly different educational outcomes at the end.

either way it tends to even out once you get to university; people reliant on tutoring to spoonfeed them what amounts to the answers in a subject will often find themselves punished by 2nd year when most courses actually require independent and critical thinking.

How r u guys preparing for that lat? I reckon I’m gonna look at the Oj Simpson defence to learn some ‘legalese’ and then do some practise responses.
from memory i'm not sure how you would even study for the LAT outside of general writing and analysis practice. there's no specific legal content in it, it's just pure analysis and argument on several random topics.

Honestly as a private school kid the only reason why we do so good is we kick ppl out who don't achieve that well, so the range is more close pushing us up, and half of us don't even get the subject we want because in the schools eyes we won' do good so super smart kids get pushed to lower scaling subjects.
