Where did the Family First Party come from?! This is so weird, I can't believe Australia is becoming so backward and conservative. Its actually really depressing...

To make matters worse, the Liberals can now virtually pass anything they want, since they got such a huge majority in the senate.

Labour is a safe seat with BOS cos young people in Australia are generally intelligent...which means that in 20 years, perhaps the overwhelming majority will be for Labour?
You mean that huge majority of half the senate? It requires >50% to pass. Although the FFP is likely to vote with them on social issues.

Labor (We are not British, we do not have a Labour party) generally attracts younger voters, however, people also turn Liberal, after all younger voters were voting for Hawke/Keating but why isn't Labor winning now?

I should have said an overwhelming victory for Labor. FFP is ultra right wing in terms of its approaches to social issues; they oppose alternative religions and are homophobic...I dunno if they'll find much common ground besides medicare.

Perhaps people 'turn' Liberal because they've forgetten all the mistakes of the past that we've learnt about in Modern History and Geo. And because its still fresh to us, we can see that the Liberal government seems to be repeating similar mistakes. For example Menzies attempting to outlaw the Australian Communisty Party in the 1950s and Howards proposed anti-terrorist legislation which could undermine rights of free speech. http://www.whitlam.org/resources/Terrorism.html

I think people vote Liberal also because they've already established themselves in the world, like they've bought a house etc and have steady incomes, therefore they're not so reliant on public services. Do any Liberals agree?

you could be right and theres nothing wrong with the australian majority wanting to keep the govt in power that gave them the means to do so but gah Im happy with the election result so maybe others dont see it that way. Hey its my birthday tomorrow...

But that to me, is so selfish and argh!!! Because its not like if Labor got in yesterday that people with their houses and steady incomes would have suffered.

No no it was a good observation and i dont see it as selfish if thats what people are doing... i just see it as sensible. Its kind of like saying 'why mess with a good thing...' although most likely some labor people will insert something about being afraid of change yadda yadda right about here...

The senate paper was very long wouldnt you agree? :p

The truth is that young people weren't around to see the harder times, which could be why more young people voted labor (if they did) it could also be because generally teenagers are little rebels and alot of people wanted to 'get rid of that old fart howard'.

O well, too bad young hippies with Che Guevera T-shirts.

if you really think that you have missed the point of Labor and its supporters...you also happen to be a teenager...

where is this perception of harder times come from?

are you really better of now under howard? You now get to pay for education and health? But thats ok interest rates are low i can borrow that money
don't tempt him....plus he doesn't care about health and education. not point preaching to a brick wall.

Yes i do also happen to be a teenager, but i don't think you can deny that there is a large ammount of teenagers who's opinion on the election was 'howard's a dickhead' who probably do wear che guevera t-shirts, i know a bunch of them.

The perception of harder times comes from most of the older people I talk to... most of them say 'it used to be much harder' on some issues ie, getting into uni, getting a job of course it was probably easier a few years ago. I'm not sure where they get their perception from, but i'm guessing it's simply because they've experienced it.

I go to a private school, have private health insurance.. because my parents both worked 2 jobs each from the age of 16 through to 21 when they had me, they then slowly paid off a house and started a business... etc etc i'm not going to go into it.

But basically I believe ANYONE baring some type of mental disability that stops them can become more successful income wise, they simply need to up their productivity :) Single mom's of course cannot do this.. at least not untill their child is of the age to go to school, then i believe they should start the work.

Asqui there are few situations i can think of where will power and hard work couldn't get you out of it.

that part is true...interviewing patients ( they tend to be elders ) most voted liberals for exactly that reason...i don't know where they get that opinion from but its their decision...

Its not really about being better off under the party that won. I agree with that quote in the Alibrandi movie about voting to keep the worst party out rather than get the best one in. You agree? I mean Im pretty anti labor ill admit that but there were parties there that niether of us would have wanted within woopi of power.

15mins mmm...

yea and i said that.. also go back and read that post sorry i edited it to answer ur other question.

Most people don't listen to what John Howard TELLS them, they don't listen to what LATHAM tells them... they simply decide 'do I want a new government?'.. Only the most contraversial policies usually manage to make their way through to people ie the Forests policy getting through to the Timber industry.

I dunno I'd kinda like to see a party like the Socialist Alliance manage to get power, maybe when they turn australia into a failed state then they'll learn their lesson.
Silly little socialists.

Geez, I joked when I heard the Senate result: "Shit, I'm gonna need a UAI of 95 just to do an Arts degree at UOW!" - maybe it's a actually a premonition...
