Why do i get the impression (from other threads, etc) that law @ MACQ is inferior compared to the other uni's???

bcos its not 'famous' for its law faculty and the cutoff isnt that high compared to the higher grade unis, macq dont specialise in law anyway, more commerce related...

yeah, the uai cutoff is lower than others, it doesn't have the prestige. whether the teaching is better or worse than other unis i do not know.

I'm thinking of doing Law/Actuarial, so while Macq is a definate for Actuarial Studies, it's also law that's giving me second thoughts. I suppose it depends on if you want to put more focus on the law part or your other degree more.

I'm also interested in hearing from current law students from Macq about why ppl don't recommend it if you want to focus on law. Anyone here doing law?

Why's that?

I'm glad to learn she likes it, what worries me most probably isn't the enjoyment factor, but other things; international recognition, study resources, quality of teaching etc.

If only I could do actuarial at Macq and Law at UNSW - would solve everything (except for perhaps the problem of travel!). *sigh* Along with this, I'm worried if I can get the 99.1+ to get into it and have to worry about doing Actuarial and then transfer - which would mean Macq would be the best option.

I just don't know very much about what to expect from different courses at different unis... Frankly, even if it's highly subjective I'ld prefer advice from first-hand students rather than my school careers advisor or other teachers. Hell, they've gone through it all before so they'll more likely to understand.

Law @ MQ is actually quite interesting. Besides the readin', people I've talked to say they like it.

i want to do law/psych at macq, i am in the same boat as u, mac doesnt have the reputation of nsw or syd, but i have spoken to a lot of ppl about the quality of law at mac and the reasons the uai is lower is because compered to the other two, it is a relatively young uni. the current dean of law is the former dean (or lecturer...) from both nsw AND syd. she enforced (to me at least) that the quality of teaching isnt lower, its simply the reputation and age of the uni that mean they have the lower uai. but the uai is creeping up every year. the law students ive spoken to a mac LUURRRVVEEE the coarse, and mac does really well in mooting competitions and their law society is fantastic (esp for the social side). i went to that law evening at nsw, but the law society seems really...i dunno, stuck up. very snobby, whereas at maq i really felt like they enjoyed studying their course and enjoyed being where they were. if we're gonna be stuck there for 6yrs (for the d.degree) then i sure as hell want to be enjoying studying my degree.

no, it isnt looked "down" on by employers, as maq really does have a good reputation now. i dont know if that helps, but im definately keen to do law at maq, it is just a really good atmosphere there, and (from what ive been told) the quality in teaching is not lacking at all.

That sounds really cool :p *ticks off 'fun atmosphere' on her checklist*

I've been hearing from friends that especially for law, you're really buying the reputation rather than the education. But thinking about it, unless I want to take my degree and head overseas, domestic employers probably wouldn't give less value to it just because it wasn't from UNSW/USyd. Hmm... Macq looks better and better. :) There's still so many negative points about it, but I can't expect them to tailor everything to fit my criteria can I? :p

I can't decide between UYSD or macquarie for Arts/law. Sydney is better for "law" but macquarie is soooo much more flexible for arts and has more things i want to do. I can get into macquarie with my UAI, whereas sydney i'd have to do arts and transfer but sydney has offered me a scholarship. Eenie meenie miny moe. i can't decide!!!!!

But mememe isn't straight into Law at USyd, and requires a transfer; whereas a MQ, mememe is guarenteed a place.

But apparently usyd gives out D's and HD's like they're nothing. I mean, there's a post in the usyd forum by a guy who's doing econ and got 4HD's and 4 D's with only like 1 hr of study a night. So if mememe is willing to work for it, he/she shouldn't have a problem transferring.

Ah, if that's true then USyd is the place to go for Law.

Pretty much all unis scale their marks. So you'll always get more students getting passes and credits than D's and HD's.

Internal transfers into law at Usyd and UNSW are very hard (the unis tell u this themselves)...and for the few students who get into law, there are many many more who miss out.
