Lear and the Fool have a weird relationship, there are times where the Fool will give Lear great advice, and other times where he will taunt him and metaphorically call him and idiot. This is mostly in act 1 scene 4. My teacher said that Lear and the Fool are very similar.
There are ways of looking at the relationship between Lear and the Fool, which make the both of them lovers, an example is in the hovel were the Fool is in Lears coat.

my teacher tell us to think of the fool as lears conscience, and theres a few good quotes (thou none with me) to support that argument. He makes alot of comments on Lear's flawed character, which Lear should be able to see, but ignores due to his excessive pride.

Also explains the Fools absence after Lear comes out of the storm, as he finally becomes conscience of what is going on.

Hope that helps :D
