Are lecturers in Uni really that horrible, or is it just my maths teacher making it sound so bad??
He tells people (pass students to come and talk to us )
they all said Uni is hard.....etc. and the lecturers don't care about you...unlike high school.

IS THIS ALL TRUE?? TELL ME!!!!

yeah, what cyph said.

generally, if you've got a hugeass cohort of people doing the course, ie commerce where a lecturer will be lecturing like a few hundred people at a time, you are completely left to fend for yourself as the lecturers will not be fucked looking after each and every one of u

if you're in a smaller course, however (and particularly the fine arts/design/musical courses) in courses of a smaller candidature you'll have lecturers/tutors who are pretty interested in guiding you with your 'talents' etc

all lectures are pretty big like 100-200 ppl but if youre stuck or confused just go up to them after the lecture or make an appointment to discuss something. Also at uni there are tutorials like small classes where it will resemble a typical high school classrom where you can get the tutor to clarify anything you dont understand. Theres always help if you need it at uni, you just have to know how to find it.

Most lecturers just don't care... and they're not paid. All they're paid to do is stand there and ramble for an hour or two (maybe three) a week and collect their paycheck.

More the most part, lectueres don't seem to care much about you. If you want help with something, most will let you speak to them quickly between lectures or will answer an e-mail, but it's nothing like the relationship with teachers at high school. You'd be doing pretty well if any of your lectuers even know your name, even in the smaller classes of 30 or so people. Lecturers also do not hold your hand and make sure you keep up and hand stuff in, or understand whats going on...if you can't keep up with everything youself, then you're shit out of luck.

most of my teachers suck.
chem teacher = textbook lady
maths teacher = strict, just-do-it type of guy. no feeling at all.
english teacher = raves too much. does not teach properly.
latin teacher = spoon-feeds.
latin ext. teacher = actual hard-worker but strict.

it varies from course to course.
yes, generally more distant than schoolteachers... but then again all but one of my lectures contain at most 80 people, the other one being interdisciplinary and having about 150 people in it. most of my lecturers know most peoples' names, but no-one knows everyone.

actually it really depends on your lecturer, we have a course co-ordinator who's also our lecturer and he knows everyone's names and really looks after us a lot. he doesn't hold our hand but he's very encouraging and stuff

Hi,
With everyone saying "lecturers hardly know anyones name" etc - it has been the opposite with me. I go to University of Canberra;for example in Business Statistics it is a REALLY hard subject and we had exams for it every 2 weeks. Our lecturer would come in on Saturday and Sunday and help the whole class (there were about 300 students), she done it in sessions. And for the final she came in on sat, sun and mon (the public holiday). She was a VERY commited lecturer - One mature aged guy said she spent 2 hours with him going over some basic stuff one-on-one. Overall though, I must say my classesare big i.e. 300 people, and all the lecturers do help outside the time they allocate for "student questions". All lecturers give back exams with comments; One lecturer even marked 300 economics paper over the weekend and put a 1 paragraph comment on weaknesses etc .

BUT I must admit there is no 'personal relationship' like you would have with a teacher. i.e. They would only know your name and thats all , your teacher (especially in smaller schools) knows everything about you.

How so? At high school, you're most likely in a group of say 10-20s... and the teachers will talk to personally... and pretend to care if you haven't handed in your assignments, homework, whatever. But for a first year student, you're in a lecture with a couple of hundred... and the lecturer can't even remember your faces, let alone talk to you about problems in a subject.

Our sociology teacher actually told us something that I found quite interesting...the university tries to select lecturers who are more involved in doing research for the UNI, than they are in teaching the students. Research helps get more money for the university, wheras investing heaps of time in the students is good for us, but the UNI itself doesn't get much out of it. So basically, they want lecturers who teach well enough so that the students get what they need and aren't going to revolt, but they don't want people so dedicated to the students that they spent too much time worrying about them. People who do usually don't move up, and stay stuck in the same positions.
