hello

this might seem like a really dumb question- but can you ask rhetorical questions in essays???

It wouldnt really matter i suppose- i was just wondering???

If I wrote a rhetorical question I try to answer it as well, to show them how much you know.

as long as you can answer that rhitorical question, I don't see why not.

Depends on your marker, what you are trying to argue etc.

I've used it in a law essay for which I received a mark of 82% for.

Yes you can, it's a matter of your personal style. As long as the whole essay doesn't tend towards the tone of colloquialism [asking rhetorical Qs can tend towards that].

So yes, but do it sparingly, AND make sure you -demonstrate knowledge- otherwise why ask the rhetorical question!

I don't know. I suppose you can, as long as it is fully relevant to the actual exam question (and isn't the same as it) and as long as you answer it. Though I have never used it in a legal essay, I have used it in a legal speech to make my point about homosexual legislation, and I use it quite a lot in english...
