Does anyone know what discretionary power is? Like the police using discretionary power?

Discretion is where they have the choice whether or not to give you a fine or arrest you. For example if you were speeding 5kms over the limit they may use their discretion and let you go. It's important to note that sometimes discretion steam discriminations, eg a woman gets off but a man is given a heafty fine...

yes. like if someone broke into your home and stole a CD or something, then the police will probably use their discretionary powers and won't investigate matters further, due to finite resources or whatever.

Haha yes i heard about that, like if you got your hubcap stolen the police wont investigate it unless it is a roll royce cuz they are worth about 2 grand

E.g. to arrest or not to arrest, to caution a minor etc
