Liberal Party considers mandatory post-school military service policy for all Australian school students (1 Viewer)

Do you support the Liberal Party’s idea to conscript all Australian 18 year olds?

Just saw this posted to Reddy.

Liberal Party Vice President Teena McQueen says conscription for school leavers is an “excellent idea”.

“They can perhaps learn to love and appreciate their country by doing that,” Ms McQueen told Sky News host Jenna Clarke.

“I’d look at compulsory service of some sort after school.”
Given that this year is an election year, what does everyone think of a potential return of military conscription if the Liberal Party/Peter Dutton wins and decides this is the way forward? Would you support the change, or would you protest all the way to Parliament House?

Bad idea, it's just a standard re-fried "appeal to the base" policy that has zero chance of becoming reality. The ADF is usually strongly against conscription, even though they have recruitment issues. Due to the volume of conscripts, it will be very expensive and unproductive to train them. This is compounded by the fact that conscripts are vastly inferior to professional soldiers in terms of morale and aptitude. Having worked with many ex-ADF staff over the years, I can say that 90% of them are outstanding to work with - they are very capable and versatile in terms of skills. This wont translate to young people forced to be there and it could bring down the quality of the ADF as a whole.

The money spent training them could better be used providing subsidies for young people, like cheaper driver's licences/rego fees etc. That will help young people far more than wasting their time with conscription.

If the Liberal Party does win and Dutton decides to enact this policy, could the current ATAR system be changed so that your ATAR factors in both your performance at school and your performance in the mandatory military service (like an overall ADF aptitude score) for university admissions?

I don’t see that happening or why they’d do that, the universities determine their own entry schemes and they wouldn’t have any interest in your ADF aptitude score

I think he has done pretty well considering he is carrying more baggage then an airport. Also, he needs to make inroads with the Teal seats, hence the more moderate tone.

Instead they should do conscription for year 10 school leavers. Year 10 school leavers often end up as tradies, therefore they are way more fit in serving in the military than others.

Then where would we get new tradies from? Especially in a time where we have to double the amount of homes and apartments we currently have

they really shouldn't. firstly why are early school leavers being targeted, not everyone needs to go to university and we should encourage more people going into trades or other pathways instead of people who only go to uni because they get told to (nothing wrong with this decision, but guaranteed if that's a rule, anyone who doesn't want to go to the military will go to uni and no one will want to drop out early and go and do an apprenticeship / take a couple of years to get physical skills and then go into a trade).

secondly, consider the other bunch of early leavers, who may not be in the best place mentally or have issues that might make dropping out of school a good decision. is it a good idea to have these people in the military, not to mention people who aren't even adults yet, or haven't had any real lived experience outside of school? look at other countries with conscription, what ends up happening is many uninterested young people who become alcoholics or worse.

thirdly, conscription doesn't address the underlying difficulties that the adf has (and also why do we even need conscription at this point? there's no war, and if there is one why not just conscript then if ever). what are the actual reasons why they have low numbers, maybe they should increase benefits or do other things to make people interested rather than force everyone into a year of service, when there's probably not even the infrastructure to do so - which ultimately just makes it seem like doing this would just be to funnel more money into the military rather than any other reason
