As the seven ancient wonders of the world were matched by seven modern wonders, the seven deadly sins have been given a modern version for a globalised world, announced by a Vatican official yesterday.

Polluting, genetic engineering, obscene riches, taking drugs, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice join the original seven deadly sins defined by Pope Gregory the Great in the sixth century: pride, envy, gluttony, greed, lust, wrath and sloth.

This is totally worthy of respect and should be taken seriously by reasonable people

God was offended not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbour's wife but by ruining the environment, conducting immoral scientific experiments and genetic manipulation.

Traditional Catholic doctrine divides sins into mortal and venial (lesser) and holds that mortal sins, if unrepented, lead to eternal damnation. The Catholic catechism says "mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God's law", while venial sin allows charity to subsist but offends and wounds it.

The whole "updating" as a concept absolutely frightens me?

This to me appears as though they're admitting that the Bible has lost relevance with modern society.

It also says to me that instead of Christians understanding what is already in the bible to figure out that polluting the earth or what not is destroying God's creations, the fact they need to vocalise and articulate it tells me they are making it all up as they go along!

What an absolute idiocy as to add "taking drugs" alongside with "greed".

Go and twist the religion to suit yourself why don't you.

yeh i dont understand why abortion is on there. like seriously as you said. would people prefer junkie, dero kids growing up, falling behind the standards of the world and adding more burdern on the world. no one is going to take these ' updates' quite literally and not get an abortion or anything. i dont understand why they have tp update it anyway, makes the bible seem even more unrealistic as it did to me before!! and not picking up your dogs shit can cause your 'damnation' WTF serisouly the pope and the officials at the vatican need to wake up to themselves.

I think that they admit that homosexuality is not a choice, but the afflicted should remain celibrate.

Im all for the updates. He said some good stuff about hedonism and consumerism corrupting all of society, including Christians. For the vast majority of people/proles, the Church can be the only institution where they learn proper morality. Making do without God is to everybody's detriment.

Well this is fucking stupid. We go from 7 deadly sins that are intrinsic, are within every person (ties in with the whole everyone sins thing) and are short, sweet and nonspecific to specific extrinsic actions that a handful of people are going to commit (compared to mankind) and are frankly convoluted.

Also, its wonderful to see the Vatican espousing the non-commital of acts that will cause social injustice as well as being against the procurement of wealth seeing as they are such an incredibly wealthy bunch.
