wtf is up with the labor party, first they lost the election (thank god)
and now they askin' australian celebrities to help them
win the next election (it shows how weak they are without the media)
and cant debate the howard government without needin' help from the entertainment industry.

this makes labor low, very very low, lets just hope the liberals
get delta goodrem to make the liberals get high reputations for
the next election.

THE Labor Party has approached Eddie McGuire to help it win a federal election.

The Collingwood AFL club president and Channel 9 personality admitted yesterday that he had been asked to stand for the ALP.
The approach is part of a Labor strategy to recruit celebrities.

Mr McGuire told The Sunday Mail he had not ruled out a political career.

"Politics interests me," he said. "I have been approached in the past on it, but it's just not something that's on my radar at the moment."

But a political career was possible post-TV.

Labor is also targeting other AFL identities, including Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews, Essendon's Kevin Sheedy and league boss Andrew Demetriou.

A senior Labor figure confirmed Mr McGuire had been mentioned for the outer-Melbourne seat of Scullin, held by Harry Jenkins.

"The party is interested in these sorts of people with broad experience," the source said.

But putting up a celebrity candidate risked an ugly preselection battle, unless Opposition Leader Kim Beazley gave the nominee the "green light".

Mr McGuire said he had met Labor powerbroker Senator Robert Ray, a Collingwood supporter, on plane trips.

"But we didn't discuss politics," he said.

when labor was in power before 96, australia was in hell at that time,
i know it because i went through it, after the howard government came to power
this country was in a better place, i know alot of views about government policies etc all that stuff because i've learn all this stuff and was taught all of this at a young age till now, thanks to the libs for youth allowance :)

The sentence just about sums up the quality of this whole thread.

Actually, it does matter, so try not to make the same mistake again.

Saying that the country is going to be fucked if they are ever in charge again is a fair enough clue I think. This is just a stupid internet forum, it doesn't matter how I spell anything. It's like the people who point it out if you say your instead of you're, no one cares.

True asquithian, but I see it like watching tv..
You can like a show, and not understand all the themes etc, or know who wrote the show and their background.. and still have a good enough opinion.

Either way each party has to be able to pull of apathetic and uninformed vote if they are to win the election. At the moment mainstream stupidity and apathy has its money on Howard. During the early 90s it was Labor.
IMO it swings both ways, but the obvious solution is to allow people to waive their vote, like in America.

It's nice to know that less than half the Australian population know we have a written constitution. I can assume that a lower percentage actually follow politics and know what is the upper house and lower house and the simple things behind politics.
So?

This is why academia and other have very little confiendence in 'the people' when they vote.
We've become a little red-centric have we? So asqy, do we need someone to decide for the people now...?

I don't think would have any grounds to dispute the idea that increased civics education would not make democracy in Australia healthier. Educating people would also not amount to communist style paternalism.
I won't dispute that. Though there is a large difference between "very little confiendence in 'the people' when they vote." and education. If it's education you're proposing, I'm all for it. ;)

Oh yes... 'educating people'.
When my uni lectures consist on Noam Chomsky, Stalinist propaganda, and a Lecturer preaching the beauty of anarchy...
And reading a message from the prime minister as 'propaganda'. No positive outlook on the US or Australia....

I must say, i'm not sure if 'teaching' people about politics will really work.

How can you have confidence in the peoples vote when they have no knowledge. Hypothetically.

If the people did not know the different between the Labor and Liberal parties and the people voted in Mr X for the Labor party... I doubt that we should have confidence in that decision by the people.
As I said, I won't argue your suggestion of education in civics - I think it's a good idea, though *I think* that kids who do the school certificate are now getting two years of civics rolled into their geography and history courses.

To be honest though, as I said before, voting should not be compulsary. On one hand I can understand that this way any government that is elected is truly a representative government of the people - but if people want to boycott the vote they still will.

In all honesty - it's peoples choice on whether the want to be informed or not, and even those that aren't as well educated, or as interested in politics as some, still should have the RIGHT to vote, anything less is despotism.

Yup, allowing people to waive the vote really sounds like the way to go.
