Recently there has been some ( justified) criticism of the standard of spoken English by foreign students, but have a look at the actual condition of local ' strine" English !

MONASH University :
...90 per cent of his first-year students could not identify a noun
...only 20 per cent of English teachers understand basic grammar
...500 students in communication were strangers to English grammar
...no idea how to use apostrophes, or any other punctuation for that matter
...random spelling was in and sentence construction out
...half thought plurals were formed by adding an apostrophe-s, as in apple's

lolwhut? That's unbelievable! That's why I don't approve of the educational system here--why do they learn by speech rather than by writing? So here we have a bunch of idiots who know how to talk but not write. Everyone, go back and do your Singaporean grammar books! I'm so glad I wasn't raised under the Australian system for that crucial part of my schooling.

computers w/ spell check make grammar & handwriting redundant

it's the domain of grumpy old people now, who gives a shit

the amount of effort from schools you need to turn everyone into grammar robots isn't worth the payoff (next to nothing)

most ppl only need to be able to write well enough to fill out government forms

anyone who really needs to be highly literate will pick it up from reading anyway

Obviously from a survey conducted at Monash. For details , please contact Monash.

hahah. Fucking hilarious.

I love it when dumb people try to justify their laziness or lack of self-education, eg 'calculators can add for me, therefore I don't need to know how to'.

Fucking lol.

Btw, I just typed the common grammar mistakes into MS Word, and it doesn't really ever find them in the way that they're actually misused.

it's not really necessary for most people though

who rly cares?

EDIT: see the whole problem is claiming that not knowing where an apostrophe goes or something like that makes someone "dumb"

Nup, claiming that you don't need essential skills like basic English and maths skills makes you 'dumb', imo.

It takes me exactly 30 mins to teach ESL students the course on plurals and apostrophes, and apart from the occasional fuck-up, they've got it for good. I don't see why people can't simply devote a small amount of time to teach themselves these things rather than get in arguments about whether they're important or not.

People who can't use grammar/spell are people who don't read books, therefore, are dumb.

i think we can also blame the use of txt messages, and the use of spell check on computers, and further more forum and chat sites like this
Has nothing to do with the media of interaction. It's completely a cultural thing.

Many countries which have kept their language as important, yet are experiencing the same technology that we are, are in fact noting the improvement of the language users.

Firstly, intelligence was and never will be a value for Australian culture.

Because of this, secondly, our school system prefers that students can analyse the journey on a CD cover to being able to use spelling, let alone grammar, correctly.

Unnecessary space between the word 'period' and the period, comrade.
