I started with the Hobbit but got a bit bored seeing I was itching to start the trilogy. So I did.

whats the deal with the Hobbit? is it related to LOTR, an offshoot or what?

The LOTR is a sequal to the Hobbit, so introduces alot of the characters seen in LOTR. In the intro of the LOTR books it explains the finding of the ring.

Basically, it kinda started the LOTR in a way but you don't have to know the Hobbit to get LOTR

Evenstar is the translated title of her name. Undmiel is the non-translated form. So yeah they do mean the exact same thing.
