Im a uni student looking for part time work, ive handed in resume's gone door to door, been through large companies recruitment processes (coles/myer... grr) and have been sucessful in every single one of these but they are awaiting for jobs to arise for me. This highly contradicts the goverment sayin there are companies dying for workers

I came across a site www.jobsearch.gov.au hoping that i'd find a job on this government based website (coz theres jobs just EVERYWHERE apparently)

But, was shocked to find for that 90% of the jobs on this site, you cannot apply unless you have a "JOB NETWORK CARD". And you cant get one of these cards unless you are recieving unemployment benefits from the government.

Im not recieving unemployment benefits (i dont think im eligible), and think this is wrong, because i am not sucking money of the governments centrelink system, i have a decreased opportunity in finding a job to support myself whilst studying at uni..

Thoughts?

- Unemployment amongst young people is obviously higher than the norm, as is unemployment in regional areas (if you live in Newcastle, Wollongong, or Canberra.)
- Use the Careers centre at your uni.
- Apply for youth allowance, there is no good reason not to.

Oh btw, if you didn't get a job at the end of the day - you've failed. Regardless of what people have said to you. :p

Perhaps your resume needs some work?

Students cannot be unemployed in an official sense, and if you are a student then of course you may have difficulty getting a job in an increasingly casualised 'we need you now' workforce. The only thing that you can do is keep on searching (everywhere, so let go of any unreasonable standards that you may currently adhere to, if possible) and hope for the best. That attitude may seem defeatist, but that's the life of a uni student. Try and take solace in the fact that you are not alone, if that helps in anyway.

im not eligible for youth allowance because my parents wages are too high.

i dont live in a rural area, i live near parramatta and im willing to travel.

and i dont think my resume is the problem, its probably more the hours i can work because im studying full time. Regardless that isnt really the point of this post, i think its ridiculous that you need to be recieving benefits from the government to be able to apply for these jobs that are "screaming to get workers"

its a catch 22

EDIT: yes i agree with Generator

Its amazing how often I hear this, usually from people who don't have the iniative to even apply. There are two routes you can take with youth allowance, three really. One of them isn't means tested.

Your could try a job finding agency, like Tursa or something?

It always hard to find work i think, espeically the work you are looking for, the way employers see it, they can pay someone younger than you, for 1/2 the price, and they could probably do the same job as you!

Thats hy i think its kinda important to find a job earlier on (when your 15,16) and then keep working there through uni!

Im having the sme problem at the moment finding a job because i have moved for uni!

in australia it is amazing, that if you work one hour a week, you are classified as imployed.... how stupid, when we get politicians on tv telling us that our employment rates have gone up etc...

nope, as long as your name is on a payroll and TFX is registered with the government you are classified as employed, that include working 1 hour

1. You would need to demonstrate that it isn't reasonably possible to stay at home (this does not mean you are going to university in another city).

2. It's 16k in an 18 month period.
