I thought you could switch from tiptronic to full auto in the M5? I was a bit disheartened in finding that the M5 seemed to be 'fidgety' in daily traffic as they described as I think it at least looks a little more distinguished. Then again, when maximum power/torque occurs so late, what could you expect.

Id probably take the CLS55 over the M5, beacuse of how different it is and how good it looks (also im more of a merc fan then bmw). To me, sitting in both the classes of the cars (CLS and 5 series E60) the CLS Seems much bigger in terms of length, whereas the wheelbase of the M5 seems shorter, definetly feels so, therefore id say the M5 probably handles cornering better etc, but the CLS more of a long distance performance cruiser.

Also: after seeing a review of both the M5 and the CLS55, the presenter seemed a lot more happy with the CLS compared to the M5. The technology in the M5 definetly distances the driver from the driving feel and how the car behaves, in a negative sense.

I have too, and I feel the same way in terms of wheelbase length. The 5 series seems more 'taut' if that makes any sense. The CLS' low slung stance also may contribute to it being seen as more of a cruiser, comparatively. And as for the thing about technology, that was the main huge complaint in the recent 'review' (or so they said) in the NY times I think of the W220 S-class.
Still, 7 speeds of tiptronic could prove pretty fun though? I saw a video narrated in german which did a video review of this test and the CLS growls, snarls then buzzes (you can hear the supercharger clearly, it's way cool).

PS: I'd like to say thanks for suggesting the forum, I had the same idea in mind and it's great to have a place to talk about this stuff. Also, I couldnt help noticing if your sigpic was from a thread over at mbworld.com. I know that's where i saw that picture!

they're both fugly... $200k+ down the drain for that shiz. but if i was gonna blow that sort of cash it would be on the m5 only because, for that much money, id want more than 8 cylinders

M5 - the ultimate touring sedan. Plus, the back doesn't look like an AU Falcon.

I could do better things with $200k, though.
