Macquarie Email question (1 Viewer)

tonight i finally was able to log into MyMQ - I now have my email etc through the 'messenger' thing provided online. It reminds me a lot of the Hotmail system (web based)
What i want to know, can i set up my Mail application to treat my MQ account like it does my ISP account - ie use an external program (Apple Mail, Microsoft Outlook to name a few) to manage email, so even when I am offline, all my messages are with me on laptop?
Does anyone else (2nd year onwards) do this?
I would need to know smtp server, and what settings i would have to enter.

I don't think you can pull it down straight to a client, what I have is to forward it straight to my gmail account, and label them/filter them when they get to my thunderbird account.

To turn forwarding on: Options > Settings > Mail Forwarding option at the bottom.

i guess i will just make another ISP account for uni stuff, have all uni stuff directed to that - so in a sense, it won't be a students.mq.edu.au address, it will still function like it.
Does this work transparently?

Not too sure what you mean transperantly, if you mean can you use the other account to mail messages and it'll come up under the mq email, then no.

It only forwards, and its understandable considering the sheer logistics of managing them, especially with the push for the portal convergence.

sorry to confuse
by transparent, i mean - people send stuff to MQ address, it forwards to ISP account. I reply using ISP account, that person gets my email back, but from my ISP address, not my MQ address.

As long as I can recieve all email, and respond to email through ISP i am happy
(ie does the univeristy accept mail from students, if it isn't from an MQ adress)

Ahh, yeah its transperant.

And I've found that most lecturers prefer you use your MQ email when talking to them, as most are wary of spam, etc.

the reason i am so keen to do this, is when I am not near an Internet connection, i could still refer to my sent/recieved emails stored on laptop - where as the uni system, no internet, no email...

i will create a new ISP account now
hopefully MQ might be more flexible in the future?

Even if MQ becomes more flexible.. it'll only be beneficial if majority of the students can use it..? Or know how to use it..

By allowing students to manage their email from a client on their computers, it means they can easily download their email etc.

Scenario One -
Somebody sends an email to your MyMQ email account *first.last@students.mq.edu.au*
To read this email, you must log into MyMQ on the Internet, load the mail and read it.
Once you disconnect from the Internet, you are disconnected from the email

Scenario Two -
Somebody sends an email to your MyMQ email account *first.last@students.mq.edu.au*
You load your email client on your computer (Outlook, Apple Mail, Entourage etc) and the program will 'download' your most recent emails. Once you disconnect from the Internet, all your emails are safely stored in the computer, to read at your own leisure.

By usng an email client program, you know instantly when you get mail and it is just easier/faster to manage, so IMHO it would greatly help those who want an easier way to manage mail (besides the mail forwarding option)

I have some questions about this

1. if i turn on filters and get my mq emails sent to my hotmail account, does the email turn up both in the mq inbox AND my hotmail inbox, or only hotmail?

2. if i add a folder to my hotmail account and put a filter on it, so that all emails from my mac account to go to that folder, will it still alert me through msn messenger that i have received a new email? will it say (1) at the top like when i get any other email? (-- in the process of testing this now and i will delete this question if i find an answer)

3. how long does it take generally for emails to get from the mac site to hotmail? i sent one a few minutes ago and i haven't received it yet, does it always take this long?

(purpose: i want instant notification of emails in my uni inbox, without having to log into the uni site)

1. You can tick a setting which deletes the email when it forwards it.
(Options> Settings> Mail Forwarding> Tick "Don't leave copy on server")

2. It should, it should do that with any unread messages, not just those going to Inbox (gmail handles this better)

3. Not too sure.

I suggest doing what I do, forward to a gmail account, then set up a "send as xx@students.mq.edu.au" account so that everything is done through gmail instead

2. cool hopefully it does, i thought it might not because it doesn't do it with junk
3. i have sent myself 2 emails now to try out question 2 and haven't received either of them

that way can you send when the portal is down as well (but not receive)?
so outgoing mail: from gmail, and
incoming mail: through the portal forwarded to gmail?

I haven't tested it, I assume so, since it should just have a redirect header in the email itself rather than send through the smtp servers. But it'd be useless anyway, because the other person wouldn't be able to receive the email till the server comes back up

I do the same as Mike, but I have tricked Thunderbird into thinking that I have an MQ account linked to it.

When I respond to an email sent to my MQ one, my client automatically uses the MQ email address. If I want to send an email with the MQ address, I just select it from the drop-down bar. In a new message. Very handy indeed, although I think that the gmail way is also easy?

The only thing to remember is that you should occasionally empty your MQ inbox - even though the emails are forwarded, they're still kept int he inbox.

You can have the option to delete upon forwarding, but thats exactly what I did, but I just really got pissed off with the puny 10 mb of space, and just decided to use the 2GBs or so on gmail (and the smexy convo keeping is awesome)

mac email is pissing me off at the moment. i never got those emails i sent myself. i have got forwarded mail today though (but in my junk mail) but it beats logging into the mac site to check.

Yeah for sure.

The main problem with Macquarie IT stuff is that all the IT systems (eStudent, myMQ, WebCT, etc) have been stuck onto each other over a period of time in the hope that they will work together. Of course, they don't, and students end up needing to remember different passwords and rememer the site names, all the while being frustrated with them.

It's because it's all very new, I think. Hopefully now that they've got all the systems up and running, they will work to combine and improve them all.
