Mainstream - Wreck artists! (1 Viewer)

Ive noticed that with alot of the artists i like, they are really good and "raw" when they first get a deal. But slowly as they get more into the mainstream and do more albums, their stuff gets too poppy and is definately not in the same league as their earlier stuff. I still like them, but i sometimes hate what happens to the music!

Some examples of great old songs vs newer shitty ones.....

Eminem - 1999/2000 "Just dont give a fuck/ Marshall mathers " vs 2004 "Big wheenie/ Rain man"

Slipknot - 1999 "Wait and bleed/ Surfacing / Spit it out" vs 2004 (ANY song off subliminal verses"

Blink 182 - 1997/98/99 "Dammit, Josie, Carousel" vs 2001 - 2004 "Feeling this, Online songs, First date"

well yeah, they kinda gotta tone their music down, but I suppose its just something to mellow the mind when listening to the radio, for real fanatics there's the underground where you hear essentially real rap or rock in it's "natural habibtat" lol.

yeah for most artists thats the case

jay-z - reasonable doubt VS jay-z - the blueprint, the black album - still excellent

T.I - im serious VS T.I - urban legend - still excellent

nas - illmatic VS nas - stillmatic - still excellent

though yeah u can notice the pop feel, still it doesn't completely taint all artists.

with rockers and metal its mostly the case but RATM always remained great, korn always remained good, and a few others that i can't think of right now.

In my opinion, "Mr Brightside" is one of the best songs ever written, up there with "Everlong" and "Buddy Holly".

Mainstream doesn't wreck music at all, it's a matter of the bands themselves caring whether or not they're on the radio. If they feel they need to 'adapt', and that's the key word 'adapt', then so be it, it's their music they can do what they please.

On the topic of Slipknot's Subliminal Verses, I got it on impulse I'd heard how good some of the guitar work was. I got it expecting very little and was blown away by the musicality of it, especially in comparison to their earlier trash. The vocals still leave much to be desired, but overall saying that this album was 'mainstream' and terrible is way off the mark.

Most of the artists who've lasted the test of time have adapted to the music of each decade, ie, Bee Gees, U2, Cher, and Madonna. So I think there's an art to keeping fresh and relevant to the audience, and it's not such a bad thing.

And to the person who says Mr Brightside is the best song ever written, will it be remembered four decades from now?

subliminal verses sucks a goatse size penis, ESEPECIALLY for a band who was the balls to call themselves 'the future of metal'. i cant stand slipknot now, they are such fucking posers, and you can't even pin that on their fan base.

Anders was a MUCH better singer, and the band sounded better as a whole.

Mainstream might damage a lot of artists.
However the main reason is thta most of those artists just aren't that good.
They don't really have anything to write about, hit it big with a few songs and maybe a couple albums but then their creative energy is exhausted. Case in point Blink 182

and shady, i think you'll find that those bands have always sucked. mainstream sucess did little to change that.

Mr Brightside isn't that bad a song, but it's one verse/chorus repeated, I wouldn't really call that great writing. There are alot better songs on Hot Fuss (and The Ballad of Michael Valentine is cool too, not sure what single it was released on)
