Major/Minor (1 Viewer)

Anyone know what the deal is with majors and minors? It's surely bound to be springing up in our minds now that the semester is halfway through. Or maybe we're too lazy to do this crap (like me).

But yeah, I was thinking of only doing Finance and doing an Arts minor (music) if thats possible and uni isnt being such a timetable bitch/nazi. I dont know if this is complicated by law, but i bloody hope not.


Anyone have a freakin' clue on what I'm talking about?

A major is basically a subject/area you specialise in and will be recognised on your degree.
For Example:
If you do Commerce and major in Finance and Marketing, Your degree would be
B Com (Finance and Marketing)
If you major in Finance and MINOR in Marketing, only your finance component would get recognised on your degree.

Basically doing a major, means you're doing more units than u would in a minor and thats why it gets recognised with your degree.
If you do a straight commerce/economics degree, I don't think you can major in finance and minor in arts, your major/minors must come from the Economics and Business Faculty.
If you want to major in arts, you'd have to do either a B Com/Arts or a B Com (Liberal Studies)

I dont know. The Commerce Handbook says you can choose minors outside E+B (page 18). I wish the staff actually told us about this stuff now rather than later. But if i cant, I'll beg to do it. I need something to keep me interested in uni, other than law. Horrible..

My Apologies, you're quite correct alman.

"Students may select additional majors and minors offered by the
Faculty of Economics and Business or by the Faculty of Arts,
Science, Education and Social Work or Agriculture. If a major or
minor is chosen in a subject area offered by another faculty then
a minimum of 44 credit points (at least 32 senior credit points)
must be completed for a major and 24 credit points (including at
least 16 senior credit points) for a minor."

So yeh you'd be able to do an arts minor with a straight commerce degree.

Even though usyd probably has the most flexible com/law program out of the sydney unis, I don't think you have enough cp to do any arts units. I know the e+b faculty is really lenient on law students overloading, but I'm not sure if they'll let you do arts units.

A major is usually a minimum of 4 senior units in an area of specialisation (32cp) while a minor is 2-3. Also, minors don't get recorded on your testamur.

The minor stuff not being recorded on testamur - i couldnt really care less about that. I'm would want to do it cause i enjoy it. simple, really.

with regard to overloading; doesnt a minor have to constitute part of the commerce course anyway (if its only one major)?

wish e+b faculty actually started informing students now than later. I'd dread the last minute rush and bs.

in the end, i figure you should do what you want to do or what you think you'd do the best at, so long as it adds up to 144 credit points (for single commerce degree) over the 3 years in some way or another. however, having a double major might (not 100% sure) give you an advantage of greater flexability in the workforce if you get a job using one (e.g. accounting) and you really want to get into another (say HRM) later more so than having a minor in that field

just wondering if you could tell me how I can do say 5 commerce subjects in 1st semester. Where do i go, who should i look for?

Nah, you can't overload and pick up electives/subjects from an outside faculty if you're in Comb Law. I've tried just about every avenue. The Dean's office said it was against some senate resolution or another. Pity - was very disappointed. BUT should you be able to find someone to cave in and a way to open up, pls tell me.

normally u'd be able to do 5 comm subjects without approval.. 30 cp /sem is perfectly fine... however to maintain ur combined degree, u need to do at least one subject from each faculty per semester... so 5 comm+1 law = 36 cp.... u need faculties' approval... which accordin to picaresque is not that possible...
