Hmm, it seems like this campaign is gaining momentum with those planned rallies (such as that at the G8 conference), upcoming concerts (Live8 notably) and all those celebs lining up to jump on the bandwagon.

It's all for a good cause, but i really agree with what the herald writer said: Africa needs to clean up its corruption first before we can really help and be assured that the money is going where it should.

and now im going to chime in that it isnt so much corruption (though i know that is an issue too) but rather the severe misallocation of resources that has kept many african nations from developing a sustainable and productive growth rate. when nations are allocating more money to pay back 1st world nations money which they owe them rather than investing that money into their economy to bolster growth, provide aid, healthcare etc, of course they're going to have issues.
then again, we cancel debt, their credit rating goes down and nobody invests there, therefore less FDI etc, therefore slower growth.

I thought that a few small quotes from this opinion piece would be in order, so here you all go.

Lessons in governance from the Westerners who tore the heart of Africa for centuries don't go down well.

Live 8 has one saving grace. While the politics of the event will be childish, at least the music on offer will be immeasurably better than the '80s new-wave poseurs who dominated Live Aid. Enjoy the music. Then find out what's really going on in the world.

interesting sight with some good info on similar stuff to what live8/liveaid and all them are about...

for those who don't know, 46664 was Mandela's prisoner number, so each year a concert kinda live liveaid happens with peopel like Bono + the Edge, Eurythmics, Youssou n'dor, Queen, Bob Geldof, Phil Collins, Beyonce, whole stack of African singing groups and whole heap of other celebreties run a concert with all proceeds going to eth Aids campaign...

not shown on normal commercial tv though unfortunately.only shown on SBS sometimes, not every time so i guess attention it gets in aus is kinda limited

heard on teh radio today people talking about teh eradicatin of the debts and how it's "Blair's plan" and how he's tying it in with greenhouse gas eradication too.. guy on the radio who was an editor i think from the Australian basically reckons good as it is Blair's using it to make Aus and USA and other countries look bad for their huge contributino to greenhouse gas emissions... interesting to see how that eventuates

ahhhhhh corruption

see they need people in to help govern - western trained advisers. because if you think about it a lot of african countries were colonies of european nations until very recently. recently being last few decades that is. they don't know how to govern and the systems they have in place are corrupt. it's kind of like the stolen generation - because ATSI were taken from homes as children they don't know how to parent.

and basically I think that the emphasis should be on economic development because the other stuff, social and political and so on will fall into place (and it might be pretty messy but the important thing is that it will fall into place) afterward. catalyst effect.

I reckon its a bit of a misconception that theres too much corruption in Africa ...Take a look at Ghana for instance and their democratic election. Sure there are corrupt nations, but its not as bad as some people may want us to believe. I found the article by Jeffrey Sachs (it was in Time magazine a few weeks ago) really insightful. theres some info on it here:
