A Melbourne man has been remanded in custody, charged with 33 counts of rape and 55 counts of indecent assault.

Police have told an out of sessions hearing that 90 video tapes showing alleged sexual assaults were seized from properties at Glen Iris in the city's east and Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula in March.

They say the charges against 43-year-old John Nicholas Xydias of Glen Iris relate to two of 16 alleged victims.

Xydias has been remanded in custody to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

It is alleged that the videos show a number of women being assaulted while unconscious, and the ABC understands he covered the victims faces with pictures of former TV host Naomi Robson.

A Melbourne chef, who police say cut out images of TV celebrity Naomi Robson's face and stuck them on pictures of women he allegedly assaulted, has been charged with numerous counts of rape and indecent assault.

John Nicholous Xydias, 43, of Glen Iris, was charged with 33 counts of rape and 55 counts of indecent assault in relation to two women between 1998 and 2004.
