Apologies if there is an earlier thread on this. Mods, merge the threads if you feel appropriate.

What are people's thoughts on the Australian government trying to censor the internet?

It's a disgusting idea and must be stopped.
+1

If the government seriously thinks they can get away with this, especially since they're not consulting the public about it, then they've got another thing coming.

If you don't want your kids seeing bad stuff on the net, that's the paretns' role, not the government. And it shouldn't be mandatory - that's just stupid. They've got heaps of ISP's and tech gurus objecting to the idea, but they choose to ignore the expert advice.

What's to stop the government putting websites they don't like politically on the blacklist anyway?

There has been a government web filter avaliabe for download for many years, and hardly anyone has downloaded it. And even fewer say they've actually used it after download. Doesn't that send the government a message?

If the government wants to stop child porn, fair enough, but putting up a filter is just turning a blind eye to it. Lets take some proactive action and stop the disgusting child porn at its source.

Kevin Ruddkip and Senator Aids and Failroy must be stopped before it's too late.

All of this "Think of the children!", bull shit is probably just a cover up that they're using to hide the pressure that China is exerting on them.

Apparantly some Christian sites and other religious sites are on the blacklist.

Now whatever happened to freedom of expression in a democracy?

Oh wait, I forgot, Australia doesn't have an official bill of rights. Although I do believe there are some rights specified in the constitution, but still...

Sure? I thought the only sites getting blocked are the ones without age verification.
The filter aims to block child pornography sites, and they'll sneak in other pornography sites there I'm sure. Yep, pornography is disgusting, but there are better ways of dealing with it.

Pornography isn't disgusting, what are you talking about? By the way child porn isn't hosted on websites so the filter isn't going to affect the viewing and trading of it in any way.

Well that's an opinion, I admit.

And yes, I agree that child pornography is harder to block as it's done differently than 'normal' websites. Hence another reason for the filter's fail already.

No. It won't block p2p or any other type of file sharing meaning you will still be able to get porn off torrents, limewire etc. you will still be able to download off rapidshare and big hosting sites that aren't porn-specific.

But if you're worried, start downloading and saving as much as you can now.

Guys and gals, wh othinks all the recent censorship issues in the last two years are bullshit. First games and now the internet. We're Australia, not bloody China, treat us like human beings who deserve their freedom, not locked up animals.

God, I hate politics like this.

Also, for all those /b/ tards out there.

The ACMA list has only blocked direct links to specific threads and images lololo.

It's a good thing they're too far in the past to ever hear such a thing as 'dynamic pages' =o.

What newfags.
