Anyone have a clear answer.

Given this Scenario:

Assessment Rank 1: Achieves an external exam mark of 80
Assessment Rank 2: Achieves an exam external mark of 94

The gap between the individuals in the assessment is 1.7%

The remainder of the class bombed out and achieved no higher than 65... downwards.

How exposed is Rank 2? What mark would Rank 1 Receive?

Would Rank 2, even though he achieved an exam mark of 94, be pulled into a band 5?

(Does the BOS have systems to account for such disparities?)

they would both achieve ~87

Are you sure you are not simplifying this? The gap was 1.7%... Surely, they do not merely find an average... disregarding all the circumstances which may surround it. For instance, if the gap with 0.4%....

understanding the process will not get you a higher mark. 1.7% is pretty much negligable

assessment/exam mark for rank 1: 94/80 = final mark of ~87
assessment/exam mark for rank 2: 80/94 = final mark of ~87

Slightly depressing....

Better to strive for what you can.

then no worries. No-one really talks about HSC/marks much at uni anyways
Given your calculation.... would the same be applied.... (this would be exceptional) if:

1st Assessment Rank: External: 65
2nd Assessment Rank: External 94

Would 2nd have a 79.5

(Where the gap in internals is a mere 1.6%)

Does not seem very logical.... (better yet, fair)

The internal marks aren't determined solely by your ranks, they take into account the differences in the marks.

Rank 1 would receive 80/94, no doubt about that
Rank 2 would receive his external mark of 94, and since he was only 1.7% off in internals he will receive about 91 for his moderated internal
