UNSW Bookshop textlist for 1141 has the following:

MATH1131 / MATH1141 MATHS 1A & HIGHER MATHS Course Note NOTES S1 2013
MATHS 1st YR COMPUTING NOTES Course Note NOTES S1 2013
Calculus One & Several Variables + WileyPLUS 10ED Prescribed Salas
LINEAR ALGEBRA 3E Recommended FRALEIGH
Calculus One & Several Variables 10ED Student Solutions PACK

Now I can only assume that the course notes and the prescribed book is needed but what about the other textbook 'linear algebra' and the solutions pack? Are they necessary?

Thanks

the prescribed textbook isn't needed and neither is the linear algebra book

all you need is the notes

You only need the course notes. Even the lecturers recommend you not buy the books.

The notes will make explicit references to the textbook.

I found the textbook helpful as an extra resource, and as something that looks cool on my bookshelf.

You will find that virtually every single course will have "prescribed" textbooks. You'll generally be fine without them - at worst, borrow a copy from the library and photocopy relevant pages, or some people may acquire the textbooks through questionable means. Some courses do tend to make heavier use of the textbook though, at which point you may want to consider buying it. For MATH 1A and 1B you'll only need the course notes.

Probably best to call before you head to uni (if you need to travel a fair bit). However, they should be there during O-Week.
