hi......im currently doing an oral presentation on conics and i need to address some 'areas of concern'. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to let me know!

Is it an assessment task? I can hardly believe what i heard (oral assessment task for ext 2 maths..)

let me guess, subbing in variables wrong, putting actual Y value for line-gradient formula (not Y1 or so..), mistakes between the eccentricity formula for ellipse and circles, and so many more..

conics:

sometimes you need not solve equations eg, in circumstances where lets say line l intersect conic C, and you want the midpoint of the intersections, there's no need to solve the quadratic, you can use the relation between roots and coefficients or the quadratic.

Look for symmetry in equations.

For locus questions, sometimes it is easier to determine the general shape of the locus and then find the coefficients from special cases.

Think about what to do before you start, might save you work.

Choose axes wisely to reduce calculations, sometimes it helps to place the origin at one of the foci.

Practice your algebra.

- Don't remember the formula, derive them
- Panic if you see a Q8 conics question, you will never get it right
- Always draw a diagram

Heheh, are there any conics in q8 in any of the past papers on this site? I just wanna see one.

1995 Q8 a & b (actually quite easy)

Only one since '92

And make sure you give examples in your talk, use them to highlight the "areas of concern".

Digression:
notice the trend, physics and chemistry became wordy subjects since 2001

now we have oral presentations for mathematics.

In 2010, the 4 Unit mathematics paper would consist of 3 essays.

essays... thank god we will have finished the HSC by then. Anyway, an area of concern for me is always the difficulty of interpreting what the question actually asks for...
i think you should take a feminist interpretation and back it up with some quotes from .... oh i'm sorry what subject is this again??:p

Ah yeh, oldman posted a morph of that question here not long ago. If this year's q8 is as easy as the '95 i'll be very happy.

Hehe yeh probably. I remember someone (i think it was spice girl) posted a "future q8.": "Discuss the implications of pythagoras' theorem on society..." something like that...

Here's whenever I think a formula should be memorised:

- If it's quite fundamental (important) and used often.
- If it's derivation is quite complicated.
- If it is reasonably short and easy to memorise.
- If a lot of other formulae depend on it.

Here's when I wouldn't bother to remember a formula (but derive it instead):

- If it's not very critical to remember it (i.e. not fundamental)
- It's derivation is quite simple to understand, from formulae that you do know.
- If it is too long and takes up too much memory real estate.

LOL "Discuss the role of the discovery of Intergration in the development of the fields of Mathematics and Resources. In your response, refer to at least three sources of prose form."

In your response you are to refer to your set equation, a theorem from the board of studies "equation" booklet, and a variety of other results of your own choosing.

Cyph, you're "one of us" and not "one of them" I hope.

Is Uni hard? The impression that I am getting is that it's 10x the difficulty of Highschool

My extension/application/take on wogboy's thing on memorisation: If you're ok at deriving stuff (as you should be, you derive the formulae they give you every day anyway!) The formulae you need to know are:
foci and directrices (just ae and a/e)
Tangent and normal
Chord of contact

for 1) hyperbolae and 2) ellipses.

Did I miss anything there? I mean, you end up with a bashy question no matter what they do, so anything more you assume is just lessening the work by a little bit..?
