The University of Sydney: Monday 3 July 2006
Our very popular lectures for HSC students will be offered again this year, at all levels of Mathematics from General Mathematics to Mathematics Extension 2.
Students may choose to attend a two and a half hour session in the Mathematics course they are studying. These lectures are intended as revision and examination preparation, students should have had some school experience of the topic they choose to attend.
  • Mathematics and Extension 1 students have a range of topics offered.
  • Extension 2 students will be offered a comprehensive coverage, broken into two sessions, each covering different topics.
  • General Mathematics will have a morning and an afternoon session, each covering different major topic areas so students may choose to go to only one or to both sessions. Practise with specific technology will not be able to be provided.
Our lectures are excellent value at $27.50 (incl GST) per session for MANSW Institutional Members and $32.50 (incl GST) per session for non-member schools.
Our lecturers are highly regarded mathematics educators with HSC marking experience. There will be a limited number students in any one lecture. Students will be given individual tickets for their chosen session(s), and may not change their minds on the day, as space is limited in each session.
Student Choice forms and School Summary sheet will be available here shortly. Student Choice forms and the School Summary sheet, together with full payment, should be returned to the MANSW office by Friday 9 June 2006.

Talented Students' Day is an annual event run for students by MANSW. It is meant for talented students who are studying Mathematics Extension 2, and aims to be a challenging and intellectually stimulating occasion. Students are exposed to areas of mathematics which they may have not heard of before, and see some of the ways mathematics is used to solve real world problems.
As in previous years, the afternoon session will again consist of talks specifically related to the Extension 2. Students will be able to choose a talk on a syllabus topic which interests them, or which they feel they need help with.

The J L Williams winners (left to right)
Albert Yin, James Ruse Agricultural High School; Stephanie Wong, Pymble Ladies College;
Graham White, James Ruse Agricultural High School; Chris Leong, James Ruse Agricultural High School;
Yu Heng Lau, James Ruse Agricultural High School.
Amy Yuan, Pymble Ladies College was unable to attend

Features of the day are:

Presentation of the T.G. Room Medal to the most outstanding student at the 2005 HSC Mathematics Examination and presentation of the J.L. Williams Awards to the successful students in the 2005 Mathsearch Competition.
Lectures and workshops on various aspects of mathematics given by university lecturers and speakers from industry. Afternoon lectures on Extension 2 syllabus topics
Opportunities to find out about tertiary mathematics courses from representatives of the universities.
An environment where students can mix with others who are interested and talented in mathematics.
Students are welcome to attend the day with or without accompanying teachers.
If you have students at your school who are interested in attending, please complete the 2006 Expression of Interest form and send to the MANSW Office, ENCLOSING A STAMPED SELF-ADDRESSED ENVELOPE, by Friday 5 May 2006. A package will be sent to you with enrolment forms and details of the program of talks so that your students can choose the ones which interest them.

I suggest people go to these. They can be very fun and enjoyable, and if you plan it correctly you can get some really good notes. Make sure you go around to the lectures at the end and collect notes for ones you didn't go to.

I've never been myself so I can't comment on how many students are actually in each lecture but it is not too hard to see how such a low price could be viable.

The bigger lecture theatres hold 200 students. Multiply that by 20 kids and you've got $4000. I imagine hiring a room / lecturer isn't going to set you back $4000 for 3 hours.

I'm sure there isn't as many as 200 students - but you get the idea.

I went to it last year, some concepts where covered in an interesting fashion but the problem with it is you can't cover the entire course in that period of time - so aside from a handful of interesting ideas I found it to be a bit of a waste.

so its like $20 or w/e for 3 hours? no catch... that seems a bit too cheap for me, sure its not 20 an hour? or somthing? also you say limited spaces? whats the limit in the hundreds or ten's?
Well its an educational resource made to help you, so there's no real 'catch'. Regarding the limited spacing, I'd guess(it wasn't a major concern of mine so perhaps one of the others can be more accurate) that something like 60 students were in the Ext 2 lecture last year.

BTW, I'm talking about the one at Manning not the TSD.

EDIT: Manning being the one at USYD.

I went and it was pretty boring.
All that work that was presented could have been done at home. Nothing was new to me.
