could someone tell me step by step how to work out the mean and standard deviation on my calculator, a Casio fx-100s

the scores are 76, 52, 58, 64, 70

obviously i know the mean is adding up then dividing by the number of scores but i got no clue about s.d.

thanks

1. Put the calculator into Statistics mode (Press MODE -> Press 2)

2. Enter the data. This is done by keying the score, then pressing M+ (you'll note that in blue under M+ is the word "DATA). So to enter 76, you press 76, M+. Repeat for each score until you've entered them all.

3. Once you've entered all the scores, press SHIFT, then 1 for the mean (you'll see a little x with a line over it above the 1 key. That's the symbol for the mean).

4. From memory, for the Standard Deviation, press SHIFT, then 2. You'll see a little x with a funny symbol and an 'n' next to it - that's SD, I think).

5. There you go! Once you've finished with the statistics, take the calculator out of stats mode by pressing MODE, then '1'. This will delete the stats stored up during your calculations.

I hope that helps. :)

I didnt know my calculator could do that, i only thought graphics calculators could do that!

Yay, now i dont have to worry about using a graphics!

Oh, one thing, does it do inter-quartile range by any chance? Because if it does i am so set!

What other nifty things does this caluculator do??

No interquartile range, I think. You have to work out that one yourself. All the poor thing can manage is mean and standard deviation. :p

Other nifty things... hmmm... press SHIFT then '.' for a random number. :D

I'm always happy to help out. :)
