well let me just say that the government generally only allow well established and reputable universities to administer HECS bonded places (look at GO8 for example, though newc is the exception)

so wherever you get accepted into be happy! at the end of the day, it really doesnt matter which med school you graduate from (unlike law) because you will either be practising as a GP or may choose to specialise in other fields- ultimately its your call.

remember, the patient doesn't care how much you know until they know how much you care!

I would say unless u get a really high UAI it'll be really hard to get into UNSW (even if u do really well at UMAT and the Interview).

Of course it would be hard. No matter where in the country you go it will be hard. In fact, anywhere in the world it will be hard. Why? Because it is Medicine. No matter where you go, getting that MBBS after your name will be one of (if not) the hardest parts of your life. Admission is almost trial by fire, and it gets no easier over the 13 odd years you're studying. You need to be ready to move against the current and come out on top.

gbong do you think so?
all i can say is dont give up hope...obviously if you're trying to get into medicine then persistence and determination are important traits as a prospective physician- this will be just as important in the admissions process.

umm i am not too sure...i know ENTER (or interstate equivalent) is weighted at 33pc of the final mark, so if thats the case then they shouldnt discriminate between people who have the same ENTER but different individual subject marks...as far as i know if, theoretically, two people have the same UMAT, interview and ENTER scores then most likely both will be allowed in.

However, the best advice would be to try your best in everything you do- its not as if you're going to slack off maths in the event that English counted more heavily, right?

But having said that, I'd imagine your English skills would be somewhat important in that you will have to impress your interviewers with your verbal dexterity. On top of that, Section 1 of the UMAT is a killer- my advice would be to read carefully a few times (as opposed to casually many times), go hard and go fast because the time limit will come up from behind and bite you in the ass.

That's because Melbourne Uni has no interviews.

Yeah, they've got some weird diff type of streams...the UMAT stream (only UMAT, 2 x Sec 1 weighting or something), the UAI/ENTER stream (I think), and the combination stream. But definately no interview.
I think it should be given on the site...

gbong...I dont know! hehe, i havent started yet, im going to start first year this year, along with inasero (if my memory serves me correctly).
I read on the Monash site that there are only around 20 formal contact hours per week...so that's around 4hrs a day. But there's a lot of 'independant learning' to be done, and i read somewhere that for a student to achieve a pass grade, they must put in something like 20 'independant learning' hrs a week. So in total, 40 hrs if u want to pass. And obviously, if u want higher grades = more hard work = more number of hours studying! :)

ehhe ananth rite? well if u tihnk about it, 40 hours a week is not much.....but thats cos first year is supposed to be easy on you, with a mere pass/fail system

however, you have to put in the extra effort in later years

thats okay, im happy to share knowledge with someone whos enthusiastic and persistent...

um so about the dALLAS thing, obviously im in no position to say for sure whether it will help you or not since I haven't been there myself. However, from what I hear, he's very condescending (and I've heard this from 3 different people myself) which couldn't be too good for your confidence. I've borrowed the materials from another person, and they didnt help as such but are useful in terms of familiarising yourself with the structure of the exam, so you know what to expect. In all, I say go to prep courses if u can afford it, but if not then just grab a trial exam from ur friend who goes and u should be fine.

Which section was hardest? Well, potentially section 3 could be the hardest cos you either get the shapes straight away or you don't. However, there IS a special tactic you can apply to succeed in section 3- if not for it then I woulda completely failed section 3. Section 1, as I've said earlier, is very difficult. ACER posted some sample questions up on their site but trust me, they pale in comparison to actual questions. So this section coudl also be the most difficult. However, I'm not going to say cos u should find out for yourself and work towards consolidating that section's marks.

What else can I say? Um u should worry alot about your UMAT, cos after all its worth 33pc. Apart from special coaching, what I CAN recommend is that you read up some books about logic and logic games. Familiarise yourself with the kind of questions they could ask you-there are not much (eg the syllogism) and you should be rite. After all, it's just application of common sense.

Section 2 is interpersonal relationships. Um this is a funny one cos all the smart ppl i know (high UAI) totally flunked this one, and im not making gross generalisations here. Again, just apply a little common sense and in fact, this section should be the easiest.

fanx for da info :D realli appreciate it....

i thought dat section 2 had no rite answers to it.... cos in da ACER booklet rite.. secions 1 and 3 had answers but section 2 had no answers. i thought da ppl who mark da test use section 2 to find out wat type of person u are or sth?

jus realised.... u from victoria rite..... are de closing dates for the applications to melbourne and monash da same, as in u hafta apply through VTAC or sth....
