Med Sci at UNSW -> Medicine? (1 Viewer)

Hi guys,

Wondering about the graduate entry stream offered at UNSW for Med Sci students. The website says it has about 15 places but doesn't offer any info on the WAM or UMAT cut offs. I'm assuming you'd need a pretty high WAM - distinction at least - and I heard for UMAT you don't need a 90+.

And yeah, how competitive is it? Just looking for any info available!

Edit* it's possible to do any degree at any uni and transfer to any Med degree at any uni that offers it right? Bit confused about that

I suggest you take care in what Major you want to do in UNSW Med Sci, as it is integral to how your WAM will turn out to be. It is very competitve in majors such as Anatomy, so I suggest you take something that will be easier to maintain a higher WAM in - mainly Physiology or Neuroscience. I believe your UMAT should need to be very average if you take that pathway, probably around 60/70 percentile (advantage of the stream), so I suggest if you are getting these types of scores in the practice ACER papers, then you are good to go.

You can do any degree to get into Medicine but you won't get the advantage of the 15 places stream unless you do UNSW Med Sci.

Thanks for your reply! If I can do any degree to transfer then wouldn't it just be easier to do say Science or even Arts where it's easier to maintain a higher WAM and try and transfer from there? Or are the places not guaranteed?

You can get into Medicine doing any degree. But if you want the 15 spots in UNSW Medical science, you have to do that degree.

Just letting you know, the lateral entry program from Medical Science to Medicine only takes into consideration the science subjects you have done in the first two years. Your specialisation (some people confuse this as a major) in Medical Science is done in the third and final year and will not affect your WAM that counts towards trying to get one of the spots. However, in the event you do receive a lateral entry position, you will need to maintain a credit WAM in your third year (which will be relatively easy for you, as having been accepted into the program means you'd most likely have an 80+ WAM).

It's also something to consider that if you do choose to do Medical Science at UNSW and start in 2015, they have changed the program to only allow 10 students to progress to Medicine. Furthermore, the 10 spots do not necessarily have to be filled, for example, they can offer 8 spots.

If you're trying to get into Medicine via this program, yes, it is super competitive. The majority of students are in Medical Science to get into the program, however, some choose not to pursue it anymore and decide to focus on the GAMSAT and post-graduate Medicine.

I know students who have gotten in with a "low" WAM (80) but amazing UMAT (99). It's variable.

You can only do this program if you have done Medical Science at UNSW, finished the core subjects up to year 2, and if you're not an international student. Hope that helped.
