Hey, anybody out there who does Media and Communications (not a BA, just M & C). If so, what is it like?

Also, does anyone know what the UAI for it is (preferably at UTS, but if not, any uni in Sydney)? I'm a bit confused about it at the moment. From what I understand it's very high 90s, or it could be 85. Maybe I'm confusing the BA course with the non-BA course or something.

Thanks :)

You can check all the 2006 main-round cut-offs here- http://www.uac.edu.au/pdf/2006_uai_coffs_csp_main.pdf

But I can say straight away that Uni of Syds was 98.05 and UTS has a number of communications degrees ranging from 73.6 (information management) to 94.6 (journalism). If you're thinking of a lower cutoff (but still a great course, I'm sure) consider UNSW- cutoff of 80.

Thanks a lot for your help :) And congratulations on your UAI!

I go to UTS (well, I'm in London right now, but I normally go to UTS) so if you have any questions about the journalism degree feel free to ask. You should read up all the information in the course handbooks, because at UTS you have to pick an area of communications to specialize in (e.g. journalism, social inquiry, public communication etc)

UTS's courses are also BAs. It's just the title really, the degrees are very media/comms focused rather than generalist arts degrees.

Oh really? That's interesting, my mum and I always have the argument that the BA media comm is different to the non BA. So they're all BAs? That's good.

I think UOW has a B Communications & Media and apparently they are developing a B Journalism. SCU has a B Media as well...

Evan is right, i'm doing a Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies at UOW. You'll find Tom (dtc) is doing this degree too. I will be looking to transfer into their Bachelor of Journalism next year though.

The UAI for UOW's BCM is 90, or 87 for local students. A journ lecturer at UOW has mentioned that 2007's BJourn will likely be above 90 - very limited intake, vocational in nature.

The BCM at UOW looks at all areas of cultural studies - 1st years do a Communication, Sociology, Politics and Philosophy as core subjects - and will take subjects that count towards their major study (in my case, Journalism). Some of these subjects are restricted to BCM students only, so regular BA students can't take them. Then there are electives that can be chosen from the general schedule, from any faculty. I can't imagine there'd be a lot of difference between this course and say UTS's BA Comm (Journalism). They're really just different names for the same sort of course. Whether you graduate with a BCM or a BA Comm makes little difference - and considering UTS's reputation in the communications area, their degree would be looked upon considerably higher.

hmm I remember the Science faculty at USyd had a similar degree, a BSc, though it does seem a bit pointless (for two near identical degrees), so they might've dropped it.
