That's a relief as I only do Bio and most of my friends (who all want to do med) told me off for only doing Bio and they looked seriously into my eyes and said something along the lines of 'What?!? No Chem?!? You Joking?!?! You're not gonna get into med!!' and at that point, I just freaked out....:argue:

Also, just wondering what's the STAT test like and what's it for and when do you register for it?
I might need to sit for that test if I'm gonna try for the other medical related courses....

Yay! Half yearlies are *over*! :)

Stat's mainly for pharmacy, again you need to register thorugh ACER to sit STAT, it's held throughout the year, it's a multiple choice test that's easier than umat but simillar in some aspects. www.acer.edu.au

ok girli, im may only be in year 11 but i kno by stuff bout med. OKzz, u NEED chemistry,, vital and ya gotta be good at it. i was gonna do med but i cudnt hak chemistry.. so you can get into medical sciences with a UAI in the eighties, at macquarie and u syd. After ur bachelor degreee u then sit the GAMSAT : a 5 and a half exam testing 1st yr uni chem and personal attributes. you then gotta pass the INTERVIEW. now this is the GRILLING part. You have the right frame of mined to get in. they WILL put you on the spot. i.e they cud ask ' if a patient gave u a gift, wat wud u do?', and u really gotta give the right sorta answers. The type there looking for is sum one geniunly considereate, who has initiative.
u CAN get rejected form the initerview if the intierviewer thinks ur not suited, but u cud just defer to chiroprating or other relatied stuff

good luk
u'll get it if u really want it.

i think u have to ask urself...

- are u smart enough? and if the answer is no.. u have no chance.. and if the answer is yes.. then ull be crushed...

either way.. the hardest part about medicine is not the interview.. its the journey!.. and if u are not ready.. ppl fail and some leave..

Ummm...I ask too much questions, don't I?
If other people want to ask stuff...ask away...:uhhuh:
I feel as if I'm taking up a lot off...um...space?:shy:

Uni Melbourne / Monash Clayton requires Chemistry as a pre requisite.

I'm genuinely hoping that people wanna do med to help people and make them better when they're at their worst....Afterall, doctors are meant to care about their patients...but, yes, I do know some friends who wanna do it for materialistic and economic reasons....*sigh* :jaw:

Ahhh....cynism. Heaps of people talk about becoming cynical of the world after they've seen a lot of things. (Note I haven't seen a lot of things...yet). Maybe years later, I won't be so idealistic....wah! Now I'm getting an image of me as being: old, wrinkly, grumpy and cyncial...wah! I'm just soooo not going into that region of thought. lols. ^-^

-rule #3: there is no miracle drug tat will save u from disease...
-rule #4: if u insist on not paying me.. why should i keep turning up?
-rule #5: am i not human? so my understanding of osler-webb -renee syndrome is lik ures.. limited..
-rule #6: goal of medicine is not what u think...

tip: there is no money.. its just stable... and u dun need to know the ASX back to front.. however u need to kno the eTG well.. lol

Hey, what do students in medicine really learn?
Oh yeah, and what happens if a doctor makes a 'mistake' in a surgery/diagnosis etc. ? If a student makes a mistake in a practical lesson (such as cutting up the wrong vessel...it's just a lil example) what happens? Do you get in trouble...or is it, meh, it was just one vessel?

PS. Hope you get a job. =)

Is there anybody out there who have questions unanswered or just wanna say something? It's kinda getting depressing here with the lack of convo/ qns.

Insurance covers *everything*? Really?
But wouldn't there be a possibility of you getting a really bad reputation or getting your 'medical licence'...ummm...cancelled?

#1: vessel.. : u dun get to do things tat cool..
u do like surgical closing.. and assisting..
#2: lawsuits: most of us are covered by the uni for $1million.. and the private insurance lik $500 000..

wat do we do?... mostly come up with diagnosis.. and take long histories... draw blood and give injections..and do examinations..

the hospital can disclose it.. but usually no medical student is tat stupid to do sumfing tat hard.... u end up watching alot..

well i would expect insurance companies to handle it all. cuz ur paying them a crap load of money. but it could be for the payment of compensation. just like car insurance where they pay the bill for damages, but the other person can still take civil action.

and also, if a doctor stuffs up, i dont think they hospital discloses this to the public cuz they are bound by privacy laws or contracts (correct me if im wrong). however, word will prolly get around i.e. spread by the poor patient who had the severed vessel.
I was watching stuff about this on insight last night, Gordon Reeves had dozens of complaints and the AMA didn't do anything except de-reg him as an obsterician.

Theirs a new scheme proposed by the nsw gov in which complaints would be mandatory and sent to NSW health and the nsw medical board, also doctors being suspendd with complaints immediately, etc. Still info about it is a bit sketchy but things are now going to change after many high profile cases.

i dun think ppl get the intricacies of medicine.. its a terrible art..

example.. this is from ovca.org.au
Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer can include;
• Pelvic or abdominal pain or discomfort, and/or feeling of fullness
• Swelling in the abdomen/ Unexplained weight gain.
• Weight loss / appetite loss
• Bloating
• Feeling tired
• Vague but persistent gastrointestinal upsets e.g. Gas, nausea, indigestion
• Backache
• Cramps
• Bladder or other urinary problems
• Unexplained changes in bowel habits
• Unusual vaginal bleeding
• Pain during intercourse

to be honest.. myself and a couple of other medics (esp GPs) almost died reading tat...
not tat ovarian cancer isnt important .. but how many ppl have those symptoms?... im sure a couple of boys do too..

then
u have to filter the mimicks from the real ones.. and its not a simple blood test... its a full transvaginal ultrasound.. :(.. which might be inconclusive.. so then u might have to cut them up... and then... the worse one is when u find out.. that they are normal.. but for tat.. they have a 2-10cm scar/s... and months of waiting .. a battery of testing.. imaging or pathology..

i mean if u had lik the big scary ones.. or lik a couple of the minor ones.. see the doctor.. but there is no point being worried to death... and is that realli worth it?... to harm so many normal individuals for a health outcome?..

and its that subjective nature that makes it hard to de-reg doctors.. in fact.. if a doctor did tat to a girl... unless they were a gyn specialist.. they could be sued.. and u would need to be kinda lucky to catch one.. and sometimes by the time they find out.. the patients are worse than is possible..
