Hello to everyone, I'm Elle.
I've been a member for a while but haven't really had the urge to post anything. Here goes:

Well, like many many many of you, I'm going to be applying for medicine and the ilk. I'm a rural student so I have many doors open for me. However, medical science sounds like a great course too. Especially at UNSW due to the scheme they have started up that allows high performance medical science students to move over to medicine after the 2nd year as well as completing an honours degree in medical science. It takes 7 years to complete both degress (obv. not including post-grad studies if you want to specialise!! It's horrid to think how old I might be by the time I stop studying  ). I digress. Bascially UAC tells me that UNSW has cancelled Med Science.

http://www.uac.edu.au/mya/courses/unsw/429007.html

Mighty confusing and even a tad bit annoying. Someone must have answers and they will be kindly accepted!

Much love, Elle.

Don't you have to sit UMAT?

No, Medical science at UNSW is not cancelled. That page was referred to mid-year entry. Med science does not usually admit mid-year students. However, B Science does.

Oh by the way, you don't get to transfer into Medicine after two years of medical science. If you were offered a place, you still need to finish your Med science degree (plus honours) like everyone else, and then you get to start Medicine.

Yeah, do you?

Oh and btw what is required in order to do this course? (UAI, extracurricular etc etc)

What are the benefits/disadvantages of carrying out the course at UNSW?

tx in advance.
Last year the UAI cut off was 89 I believe (DFEE and CSP were the same). You don't need to do UMAT to get into B MedSci but if you want to do the pathway to medicine via that course you will eventually have to do UMAT.

I'd love to do the course if that counts as a benefit:p

From your statement does that mean that its a total of 7 years? or more?.

I know that UNSW is an excellent university with graduates such as dr. singuraiah and mc cauly , ( i think i have pronounced em right , but there great ).

Also , i know that Most people get into medicine by doing another bachelor then applying after , but what are the terms on that?

Yep. The total number of year is 7 (4 yrs in BMedSc (Hons) and 3 yrs of MBBS).

the alternatively way is the graduate entry (4 yrs MBBS), which requires sitting the GAMSAT. The MedSc-Med pathway doesn't require the GAMSAT.

wah? So you mean some people r med graduates if they do 4 years of med science then just three years of mbbs?

Nah. I think if you apply to do Med Sci, you should get an email in your UniMail regarding this transfer process. It will be really detailed.

Anyway the MedSci-Med requires you (after you've successfully achieved at least Class 2 Division 1 Honours in Medsci) to complete an intensive Summer program which fills you in with whatever you have missed, particularly clinical skills and programs.

If I read the notice correctly last time, you start these classes during every summer session after you've completed about 2 years of Med Sci with a nice WAM.

Ok, i'm a first year B.sci student who missed out(like the other thousands), and i am hearing lots of confusing info.

Ok, i could do 3 years med.sci(with what marks?) and a 1 year honours in med.sci(with what marks??), what happens then, do i have to be a certain rank, how many do they take from this transfer.
WHat abotu this GAMSAT, i am assuming that it is that you have completed a bachelor degree and are now a graduate(do you have to do honours), hows the competition in these.

What marks are the guys that will be getting the transfer be getting, like 90,95,100. Thats insane, my WAM after session 1 was 62.75(dam physics, taking all of my time up???), but i'm doing better now and my wam(just for 2ns session) should be around 75, do i have any chance.

Also, would I have to transfer to med-sci to do the transfer, my marks are already stuffed, correct???

Maybe this GAMSAT, could I have some more info please.

Thanks, sorry about the disjointed post,
Chris.

- Degrees other than B MedSc is not eligible for the MedSc-transfer

- Whne you transfer from other degree to MedSc, your transcript gets wiped out. I don't know how this work in that case for the MedSc-Med entry calculation...

- There are 15 places available for MedSc-Med entry.

- You do not need GAMSAT

- Your UAI is not considered

- You need UMAT

- You probably need a High Disction WAM (85+) by the end of Year 2 of Med Sc to be competitive enough for the top 15 positions. Considering your WAM is about 63, you probably need to score very high from now on.

- Remember there are about 170 of you, so I would assume that at least 20 of you are on HD average now, so entry is competitive.

- An interview is also required

So the formula really is:
HD WAM + Good UMAT score + Good interview performance = Entry into medicine after MedSc

Ah thanks for that info.

So what are the requirements to successfully transfer from first year of B.Sci into second year of B.MedSci.
The courses and their marks(and estimates of session 2 marks are below);
Session 1;
CHEM1031:Higher Chemistry 1C (59)
MATH1131:Mathematics 1A (57)
PHYS1121:physics 1A (63)
BABS1201:Molecules, Cells and Genes (72)
Session 2(including estimates of my marks);
BIOS2021:Genetics (85)
CHEM1041:Higher Chemistry 1D (75)
MATH1231:Mathematics 1B (70)
PSYC1011:psychology 1B (70)

So my WAM after session 1 was 62.75 but at the end of the year it should be around 68.85.

So is that enough to get my transfer over.
Do i need anyother 1st year courses to achieve this transfer(would i need to do them next year or something???)

How do i go about this transfer??(Closing dates, who to see, etc)

will this transfer benefit me if i dont get into medicine as i will be doing a double major in molecular biology and medical micro & immuno.
So would a basic Med Sci be better than a basic Sci??

Ok last question.. I have been hearing from people that your first year marks don't really matter. but do first year marks also go towards your chances of getting to medicine transfer at the end of the year???

Sorry about all the questions man but i'm so confused and excited and kinda scared aswell, lol

thanks again mate,
Chris.

Survivor's going to be out for this week, because Honours students are submitting their Thesis on Friday, i.e. Today.

So I'll fill in for him.

@Dracon:

1. Transfers are based half on your UAI and half on your average WAM. Apply via UAC, same way, except as a Non-Year 12 leaver. This is hard to say, because with UNSW's scheme of grabbing people for Medicine, no doubt alot of people will apply in the coming years. But hey there's a chance :p

2. In terms of your majors they're irrelevant. All they care about is your Average WAM. Hey haha I'm also doing Med Micro Immuno. Genetics...my 85, that would be a really good mark :)

3. All your marks matter. Even a fail. Except with a fail, your WAM gets pulled down. However, if you are in Med Sci, and you're planning to do Honours (Which you will need to do anyway because to get into Grad Med you need a B Med Sci (Hons 2nd Class at least), then sometimes your 3rd year subjects may be weighted more than your first or second year subjects.

The pre-requisite to entering Hons is a WAM of 65. If you can't make 65, then they care about your 3rd year subjects rather than your 2nd/1st.

Does this help?

Thanks rekkusu,

your info helped me heaps,

I'm kind of thinking of doing honours, but i am now going to stay with my degree and my majors and i will look for an employer looking for a full-time honours student and maybe do part-time work there and work with them I have been in contact with a few places about this.

Chris.

Chris, Glad it helped you out ;)

Though when you are completing Honours (no matter what degree - B Sci, or B Med Sci) you will no doubt be using alot of time, and I mean alot to complete it. Most Hons students don't even have time to tutor 2nd/3rd year courses, so that should give you an idea)

It's much different to the conventional study you do during Bachelor degree. Hons is intended to weed out people who are pure memorising, hard drive machines (cough Law people), and to bring out the true potential of an about-to-be science graduate.

When you do Hons, you might need some assistance from your family to support you during that time (financially-wise). Because its basically an unpaid research job.

I literally had no sleep for two day and no food for a day just to get that 80 page thesis done! We are THAT short of time. And tomorrow is my thesis defense interview so wish me luck. :(

Then it will be ALL OVER!!! And have I mention to anyone NOT to do Honours? :D

Wow, is it that stressful? Good luck! Do you simply have to rationalise why you did this research, what it proves and its value to the scientific community?
