Help! Enrolled in med sci at usyd but got a late round offer for adv sci at unsw. I'd either try and transfer into uws or jmp undergrad med (not unsw, atar is bad as I screwed up finals), or postgrad med.

Based on what you've told us, the obvious answer is Medical Science at USyd; it'll lay the foundations for Medicine for you. However, if you choose Biochemistry or Molecular science in your Advanced Science degree at UNSW, then that'll be just as good.

Consider the atmosphere of each university, which university you prefer, travel time, scholarships (if applicable), the time of the degrees, and where your gut feeling lies.

i think undegrad med is overrated. in the end it's only a 1 year difference (3+4 vs 6 years) if im not mistaken. obviously if you do get an undergrad offer then definitely strongly consider taking it because it's guarunteed now and isnt for postgrad.

but to answer your question, which ever is easiest to get to and the campus/social scene you enjoy more. the academics is very comparable at both and the degrees are reasonably similar too. usyd has the new Charles Perkins Centre for med science which is definitely worth a visit

WSU and JMP are 5 years. Either way, for undergrad it's all about the UMAT.

Remember an advanced science degree is more flexible if you prefer that kind of thing. I think either one would set you up well for medicine. If you're thinking of post-grad medicine, you might want to think about whichever degree would maximise your marks. I've heard medical science at USYD is a bit of a laugh but that was said by medical science students at UNSW so there was probably some bias there. I think it had to do with the cohort of students. They weren't as motivated etc. But if you are trying again for undergrad medicine at UWS or via the JMP, your uni marks wouldn't be taken into account. You'd just have to do better in your UMAT this year.

That's thing - I need my uni marks to count. I stuffed around a lot last year and I only ended up with just above 90. Only reason I'm in adv sci is hsc plus subject bonus points.
I need a med transfer that looks at gpa, not atar. I really effed up my final exams.

If your looking to maximise your WAM/GPA, i'd go with adv sci at UNSW, in general it's much easier to get a higher grade at UNSW than at USYD. http://community.boredofstudies.org/1001/science/255054/usyd-unsw-science-2.html (Threads a little outdated, but you can probably still email universities for more up to date grade distributions or look it up yourself)

But then again I've heard people with credit averages in first/second year getting into USYD med.

Wouldn't that depend on things such as course coordinator and things like that?

Med sci is overrated imo.

Couple of reasons:
1. Why pay expensive fees to learn things you will anyway learn in medicine?
2. Doesn't substantially help with GAMSAT compared to adv sci.
3. You are better off learning some specialist knowledge that will complement with med, rather than just learning general 1st year med thing over and over again because if you do get into postgrad med, sure you will shine for 1 year and then you will eqaualise with the rest, with nothing special to offer to the field.
4. Follow your interests - unlike med sci adv sci lets you choose your own subjects to study

USYD doesn't really need a high GPA, like 5.5+, GAMSAT is where everyone gets sorted out, that and I hear interviews rek everyone.

That's thing - I need my uni marks to count. I stuffed around a lot last year and I only ended up with just above 90. Only reason I'm in adv sci is hsc plus subject bonus points.

You should look at JCU (need a killer app though, especially for uni students). Not sure about Monash, don't think they accept interstate uni students, i know for certain Adelaide only accepts its own uni students.

So realistically you're left with JMP, WSU, JCU. JMP & WSU have very easy thresholds to meet, JCU is very heavily based on the written application but a GPA of 6.5 is good, I know people with like a 6.0 GPA who got an interview cause of a great app and people with a 7.0 with a decent app who missed out.

If you're looking for post grad, pick a course which will semi prep you for GAMSAT and isnt too hard in order to maximise marks. Also think about the future and what you want to do after med sci if you don’t get in cause med is crazy competitive and medical science has no future in terms of job prospects and stuff.

I went with the easy route and did Med Sci Advance at WSU in order to get a high GPA for post grad, (3rd year 6.9GPA WAM 89). I know for certain my marks wouldn't have been so high at UNSW, not sure about USYD though.
