I was curious to know how to get into this course ( Science/Medicine - 3821) so I figured that this would be a good place to ask around. The UNSW website ( http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2005/3821.html#description ) tells me that this course is no longer offered to commencing students but is offered to continuing/currently enrolled students however it doesn't seem to exist as a postgrad course (it is in the undergraduate course list at the http://www.med.unsw.edu.au/ site).

So what's the deal? Do you transfer, or is it something which gets kinda 'tacked on' to the MBBS? I'm really interested in studying physics and some other science subjects along with medicine and I'd rather have something to shoot for that is a little more achievable, and less BS, than the USyd Combined Med so any light that you guys could shed on this would be much appreciated.

It is NOT offered anymore, you cannot transfer into it when you are in this new med program. Sci/med is for those who can graduate with a science degree after 3 years, and do not want to continue with med.

Damn, that's a pity. I can't see why a combined sci/med course isn't offered at most unis.

If you care so much do a 5 year med course then do the BSc which takes 1.5-2 years for graduate students. And you can always overload =p

I should add that check up the different unis. You can major in maths within the BA in Adelaide, for example.

it can be done at most unis..
the BA thing..
cos my math teacher did it at UNSW
:p
if u meant with med..
BA and BMedSci(hons) are available.. but the BA requires u to ask for deans permission.. and is 2 semester extra.. + summer courses or sumfing.

I know that the BA and BMedSci are options but they don't really have room for a major in math and physics with dabbling in psychology or philosophy or biochem. However I do like the math major in a BA idea Estel. I'll have to see how much leeway uni's give in their arts degrees in terms of science subjects.

Thanks guys.

Point... you can't do it under normal rules though for BA/MBBS because in UNSW there's list A and list B, and you can only do maths (list B) as a major if you've done a list A major... but then you only get to do 66CP so it's not possible. In comparison, Adelaide (I've read) lets you do a maths major in arts without having to do a different one as well.

Kfunk: In UWA you'd have the chance to do 2 majors (so maths would be clearly a possibility regardless of whether they have the list a list b garble) since you do 96CP in the BA/MBBS... another one to note :p
If you want the whole selection ultimately you have to do the BA or BSci separately and then graduate medicine as you never do the full amount of units for the BA in the BA/MBBS; eg 96/144 in UWA and 66/144 in UNSW.

oh thats wat u meant lolz.. yeah thats tru.. lots of more motivated ppl go for the BA .. i didnt realise that UNSW was so strict :p
problem with maths. .is that its a VERY demanding course for hours..

see i was supposed to do pure maths.. in Adel.. and major in it under med.. but crdt pts are lik 2 when most times it 3 for other subjects like.. with med u must complete 18 non med crdt pts.. so its hard to juggle it.. maths is awesome.. but i guess its just hobby for me..

One month later...

After some thinking I've decided that this would actually be a really good option and the BA/MBBS seems to be what I'm shooting for. If they let me in I'd be doing philosophy (something I've been wanting to study) as the List A major with as much math as I could fit around that. I'd be happy even if I didn't go beyond second year math. I still have to look into it to make sure I've got it right but it seems the way to go.

Thanks for all your advice guys.
